Having listened to OneEyedDiva's music, I thought back to the 60's & 70's and the BBC's 'Test card music'. In case this was a purely British thing, a quick explanation. When TV started to become popular after WW2, viewing was mainly limited to evenings, but during the day, a static 'test card' was broadcast to set up and demonstrate TV. Music was played along with this, originally from available records. This caused issues with royalties etc.. so after using music from other countries, the BBC commissioned original music to accompany the test card.
This music became popular with people who were at home during the day, and they would switch on the TV simply for the music. Realising this, the BBC issued LPs and later CDs of the music. Of course now with 24/7 programmes, the test card has disappeared, however much of the music is available on Youtube.
