Because of you we can't have nice things.

Show here what your pets have ruined.
This is the last one. Just bought a new cushion.

Oh I can't make a pic of the wall paper, cause I ripped it all off. Used to have birds flying around. They loved wall paper. The part near the floor was eaten by rabbits. Pulled it all off and painted the walls white. Painted immediately on the concrete walls.

Thankfully, I have nothing ruined to show. The last dove I had lived 10 years, and was as loving and affectionate as any pet coud ever be.

I suppose dog and cat owners weigh the love and affection they have for them against the cost of replacing items and repairing damages, but I'm okay with not having that choice to make.

About a year after my cat Micky died I was treating my expensive (supposed to last several generations) leather furniture with cream when I found out that Mickey had managed to put tiny holes all up and down the sides of the sofa and chair. Sharpening his claws I guess.

He once did a horrible thing in our big jacuzzi tub.

If my left leg could be considered a nice thing, he ruined it by tripping me on the stairs.

I miss him terribly.

I have mostly had Maltese and even as puppies they do not chew and ruin things. I now have a rescue dog that’s Havanese and wiener dog and she likes to pull the threads of my throw rugs.

Luckily she doesn’t do that on my area rugs, but the thread is different and I don’t think she can get a hold of it. Even if my pets ruin things, they are totally worth it. I can’t imagine not having a dog as a companion.

I've had more trouble with not being able to have nice things because of my husband rather than any pet I've had. "No, I don't care how proud you are of that beautiful dish towel someone handmade especially for you; if it's hanging there, it'll be in my way." "No you can't have those pretty new accessories in the bathroom; there is no way on earth I can drink out of that tumbler that came with them."

So I always say that alpha males are why we can't have nice things.

The numerous cats I've had over the years actually ruined the Victorian house I lived in. Most of the carpeting was urine soaked and the males sprayed on the walls (even though they were neutered). I don't think there was a square foot of floor or wall (from 3 feet down) that wasn't peed, pooped or puked on. I didn't envy the new owners that had to pull up all that carpeting, sand and re-varnish the floors and steam off the wallpaper. You can see along the baseboards in these photos. You gotta love cats.

Now that I bought new carpet they finally stopped peeing on it. The other one was ruined. I always cleaned it with vinegar.

Good grief, what kind of cats have you had?
I've had cats all my life- except in apartments where they weren't allowed- and none were ever destructive.

Are they trained to use a litter box or paper?
Yes that's why I let him hop around inside. He did it immediately in one spot in his cage. I first had other rabbits that were always on the balcony, but I had 1 left and bought him as a new friend. But they didn't get along and I had to keep them apart and they'd go mark their territory. So annoying. Now the other one is dead and I bought a new one. I have the idea that they stopped peeing and pooping on the carpet now because the old smell is gone. They now do it in one corner in their cage.

I think cat staff (in fact nobody owns a cat) and dog owners have no problems if their four legged friends cause damage. At least we didn't.

My big dogs don’t chew the furniture, but they love to rip the stuffing and the squeakies out of toys!

My little yorkie is a sock stealer! Mine or Ron’s, she’s not picky! She doesn’t chew or rip them up, just carries them around so proudly, and then will curl up with them. Sometimes she hides them in her bed.

Love this thread, I have a cat and dog. My dog is a street dog from Mexico he is the best boy indoors. My cat is another matter, she's brutal. I got her as a kitten from the humane society. I bought a catio with netting, she tore through it. I pulled the sofa away from the wall and noticed that she'd scratched the wall. She tears the curtains to shreads, not quite but they look pretty awful. I put in a new patio door, she was able to pull the sides away. She pulls the carpet and the edges of it. She uses my vintage blanket box as a scratching post even though she has 2 posts plus the cat tree. I still love her to bits.

When Mason, that boy in my avatar, was 6mos old (which was over 14yrs ago) ... he chewed and ate half a rubber shower shoe. I discovered it when he threw up bits of white rubber and I found half a shower shoe missing.

SOooo ... off to the vet we went. Doc x-rayed and found rubber in his digestive system which couldn't be thrown up. Doc did NOT want to operate on my 6mo old pup and tried enemas, laxatives, massages and everything he could think of to help Mason pass the rubber bits. Mason stayed overnight at the vet. The intention was to operate on the blockage the next day if he didn't or couldn't pass the rubber bits.

Luckily the next morning, Mason passed the last rubber shower shoe bits and that was confirmed by x-ray. I think the vet was as relieved as I was. Did I mention he did not want to open up a 6mo pup's abdomen.

There were a few other destructive incident over Mason's younger years but the shower shoe incident was by far the most worrisome and expensive.
