Being 'forced' to use self check out

Like Buckeye said, we used have full service gas stations and we all had to get used to pumping our own gas. Same thing with self check out. We'll all get used to it eventually.

I do most of our grocery shopping online...however...for some things I need to visit the spermarket. On rare occasions I use the self checkout, but usually, if I have a little time to spare I like to chat with the checkout girls on the normal checkouts.

Some days I wonder who designed some self checkouts. They should have gone with the KISS layout. One store has small icons but they sure have lots of them to choose from. Then it spews out the receipt at knee level. I swear I forget it half the time.

In the beginning, Jules, they were simple, but they were
too easy to cheat, now, here anyway, you cannot scan an
item until the previous one is placed in the bagging area,
it weighs them, they have cameras to see who you are and
if you are trustworthy, I suppose, they used to take cash, but
now they take both and /or vouchers, some places have card
only on a few tills, while others take both cash and cards.

I've been wondering about that. The first time I tried them 6 months ago, things got so messed up, I had to go to the customer service counter to get a refund on the resulting overcharge. Things seemed more complicated then, but I'm not sure if that was because I was unfamiliar with the system. No, I believe (possibly incorrectly) that Walmart has simplified them since then. Now they seem quite easy to use, but I have to be careful when I swipe the code reader. If that motion is not decisive, it can record the price twice, but the attendant showed me how to simply fix a double charge. Still, I find I must pay close attention to what I'm doing.

I don't mind the self check out at all. I remember having just a couple items and being stuck behind people with carts filled to the brim. Or someone with a fistful of coupons. Sometimes someone paying in coins. I did a lot of "lane jumping" trying to find the shortest line. Now I just scan and go.
