When we came on a ferry from Denmark and entered East Germany at Warnemuende on July 12, 1990, we had to fill out some papers. The East German Officer told us, "upon leaving the East German Peoples Republic, you have to surrender these papers." I responded, "I though the borders have just been abolished." The officer looked helpless and finally said, "but I haven't been given yet any other instructions." LOL
Later we walked up to the wall and started chipping off some pieces. Here comes an East German Border Patrol officer, obviously feeling very awkward, and mumbling, "but you shouldn't do this." A while earlier, he would have shot us. Well, eventually he relaxed and we got in a conversation, and he even permitted us to take a picture of him.
Pictures: on the ferry; on the border between West Berlin and East Germany; chipping the wall; our souvenirs; the East German Border guard.
