There are, of course, many high quality films stretching over the last 85 years, but only a few of them are in the running for "The very best".
I have numerous favorites and it depends upon what my mood is, but my al time favorite is:
The Treasure of The Sierra Madre". Starring Humphrey Bogart, Walter Huston, John Huston and Tim Holt.

Can be viewed for free on gomovies.com and/or 123movies.com

I've not seen that one. I tend to enjoy movies about families and siblings. I can't say what my favorite movie is. There are so many that I have liked over the years..

Dances with Wolves is the first one that comes to mind. I have watched it many times.

I own a dvd copy.....

Not the greatest or best by most measures, but when it first came out I really enjoyed The Longest Yard, the 1974 edition. More than any movie I can remember. Still watch it from time to time, but don't enjoy it so much...

As to greatest I think it's hard to disagree with @MarkinPhx , the Godfather was great. And I still like now and then even today. Part II was pretty good too. Part III not so much.
