Bibles

Now that my uncle is in an assisted care facility, I have to clean out his apartment. He must have 50 Bibles - different versions (King James, Revised Standard, New American & others, even some in foreign languages). He already told me which ones he wanted to keep, and the rest he'd leave to my discretion as to how to dispose of them. In addition, hundreds of books on religious subjects, especially eschatology. It seems sacrilegious to trash them, yet probably something I couldn't even give away. I already contacted the local church, but they said they just have a small library and can't accept any books at the moment. Any suggestions on what to do with all this religious literature (no sarcasm, please)?

Have you tried other churches? You could give them to a local charity, like Goodwill or something, or maybe one of the homeless missions. Local library? Surely there must be somewhere that would be glad to get them.

How about selling them on Ebay? There might be someone out there looking for exactly what you have.

It is a shame when any book comes to the end of its life , I find Bibles especially could be hard to part with or perhaps not .
I remember our church doing a book fair to raise funds , The amount of Family Bibles donated with family names written in was to me shocking
Who could give away family history is beyond me . But each to their own ..
I sincerely Hope you find a good home for them and they are not destroyed ..
Have you tried Hospitals ? when I was in recently they had a quite corner with Books to read .:)

I agree, its a book, just paper as far as I'm concerned. Thrift store or sally ann - or just leave them out in a box by the curb and someone might adopt them.

I think that asking the local Christian rescue mission would be a great idea. Many rescue mission have residents who live there, going to a rehabilitation program, and Bible study would be part of the program.
Even the people who are only there on a temporary basis usually go to Bible studies. The mission would be delighted to have enough books that more people could have one to read.

My husband is an ordained minister who worked in the mission ministry for many years, and that is actually what he was doing when I met him, and we worked together at a small rescue mission in Charlotte NC for a while after we were married.
At Christmas, we had enough donations come in that we were able to go to the local Bible Book Store and got each person who was a resident there, his own Bible.

Several of those men had tears in their eyes when they received their Bible. Some of them said it was the only gift that they had ever received. All of them cherished their new Bibles, and happily brought them to Bible study.
Now, we did not have to pass the few Bibles that were there around for the men to take turns when we were reading scriptures in the morning Bible studies.

You could make a huge difference in people's lives by donating the Bibles to a rescue mission.

Yes, Rescue Missions and Salvation Army are Christian organizations and will know what to do with the Bibles. If you don't want to go to the trouble of finding a Rescue Mission, or you don't have one locally, just drop the Bibles off at any Church and they'll know just what to do with them and be glad to do it because their #1 priority in life is to serve God….

...oops, I just read your first post in full and the last line says your local church turned the Bibles away?#%!@….that shocks me. Just because they can't use them doesn't mean someone outside of their church isn't needy. Don't they "spread the Gospel?" Don't they have reverence for the Bibles and therefore want to make sure they find a good home?

Well, there's also and estate sale or garage sale. If you don't want to have one you could stop by someone else's (early in the morning…like 6am-7am because people come early)…and ask if you can just set them somewhere with a sign that says "FREE". Someone will take them I'm quite sure because people who go to garage sales live for a super deal and "free" is too good to be true for them no matter what it is.

Another possibility , if none of the missions or churches in the area can use the Bibles, is to check with the Senior Center.
Our center here has a small library where people can either sit and read, or they can check out a book and take it home to read.
I agree with Lara that you may have to call other churches if your own church does not need/want the Bibles and study volumes. There are bound to be some churches that will either want the books for their library, or know of a place that can use them.

I agree with some others here, that a thrift store, Goodwill, Salvation Army, etc. would be a good place to donate.

If I lived in the neighborhood I'd walk over and get one. I agree a christian organization is probably the best place to donate them.

Now we have two bible disposing threads.
Perhaps she has an exceptionally large amount of bibles.
Must be a good Christian women
