Birch beer these days

I used to love birch beer. Now I don't know whether my taste has changed or whether this product is being made differently than it used to, but I bought some recently and it smelled and tasted like toothpaste. Maybe because they are not making it red anymore? LOL
 

Well, there is a decent variety of birch beers out there, from white to red to brown to blue to pink, each have their own unique flavor profile. But the one common thing is the birch oil taste which is much like wintergreen and thus toothpaste. the darker the color, in general, the less it usually has and the more it will taste like a root beer.
i have been reviewing birch beers online for over 20 years at http://rootbeerbarrel.com so perhaps check it out if you want my thoughts on certain brands. =)
 

That's interesting Anthony, I never tasted birch beer and had no idea what it was. Although I love wintergreen mints (have some Life Savers wintergreen right now), I doubt I'd like that taste in a soft drink. Learn something new every day, thanks!
 
RadishRose, It use to be made by boiling the bark of birch trees to release the oils. Now they use an oil extract.

Haunted Texan, Never had Sarsaparilla (thought is was sasparilla), what does that taste like?
 
My father used to like to have a bottle of Sarsaparilla in the refrigerator and when I was very young he taught me how to spell it, since the R is silent, I was very proud of myself for knowing that. It's been so many decades ago, I don't really remember what it tastes like.

I grew up near Niagara Falls, NY and we had a local supplier of kegs of Birch Beer, mainly so the kids would feel part of dad's beer binges...lol So, when I stumbled on Sarsaparilla bottles at the Calico ghost town, it tasted exactly like the memory I had of birch beer. Locally I found it at HEB more than any Walmart, since it is pricier than most sodas, nut it usually comes in packs of 4 bottles. Also tried the same company's birch beer, but the Sarsaparilla was more like what I remembered birch beer to be.....

What do you think it tastes like HT? From someone who never had birch beer.
