Bittersweet day today. Sold my Dad's guitar

My Dad passed away in 1998. One of his prized possessions was his 12 string guitar. He only played for fun but he was teaching my daughter to play and she has continued on a 6 string guitar he bought her. She didn't want the 12 string.I never learned how to play. I had it up for sale through the years and for one reason or another it never sold. Partly because I really didn't peruse any leads and I hated to see a dealer get it for resale, I guess I really didn't want to sell it. My Dad was left handed and had flipped the strings which made it even harder to sell. Last week I decided I have to let it go. It was getting older and I didn't know if after years in my closet it could even be played. A young man called about it. He came today and fell in love with it. Left handed also. He cradled it like a new born. He said he wanted a guitar with history. I showed him photos and told him stories. It was a match made in heaven. I could see he loved it and had no intention of reselling it. He handled it ever so gently. I was so happy for him and sold it at a much lower price than it had been appraised for. Tonight I had to get something out of the closet and the guitar was gone, almost like I lost my Dad all over again but I try and think how happy the man is tonight and it does make me feel better. The photo shows my Dad and my daughter playing together.dad and wendy guitar (800x548).jpg

I love that photo of your Dad and daughter Ruth, very heartwarming to see the two enjoying each other and the music. :love_heart: I know it must have been hard for you to part with his guitar, but it's awesome you sold it to someone who truly appreciated it and will likely cherish it for a long time. It doesn't get any better than that! Hugs.

Great story and even greater picture. You did the right thing by selling the guitar. Your dad would be pleased.

Beautiful picture.

If that is a Gibson your daughter is playing, the cherry sunburst one, hang onto it -- those things can be worth thousands depending on the condition they are in! Is it a Hummingbird? Those are collectors' items.

I love this story. Its so human and just so right. I'm sure that guy will remember your story and think of your Dad often when he plays that guitar.
I know the distress you must have felt to part with it. I got rid of my wife"s clothes quite some months after she died. I was having no problem with it until my son started taking them out the door. I started crying like a baby. It was like she was leaving me all over again. Life drags you along whether you want to move on or not. It never goes completely away but it does get better in time..

Nice to see a cherished object handed to another generation that will also cherish it...
