As soon as I saw the title I knew exactly what this thread was about. Flashback to school days, or maybe it was college. In a written English exam I was writing a piece about the subject matter that we had been given. The title being the demise of steam technology.
In my precis I had written:
"Standing close to the edge of a trembling platform as one hundred and fifteen tons of Sir William Stanier's technology thunders through at high speed is an adrenaline rush like no other." My paper came back with that sentence highlighted and a small annotation that read: "Nicely put, so original, well done."
Fabulous photo -Oy- it captures that lost image of steam power, perfectly.

There is,of course, one train that is famous worldwide. It's even featured in a James Bond film: "From Russia With Love." It is:

What a magnificent train. I have many photos, the jazz band that played on the platform, our personal waiter, the carriage interior and fellow passengers who, like us, dressed the part. Of course there's also many a picture of that beautiful engine.
