Blood in the urine, has anyone experienced it?

Over Thanksgiving, I had blood in my urine, and still do. I had an episode of acute urinary retention in June, and bloody urine followed removal of the catheter for a while. Now I have it six months later, and have not eaten beets or anything that can mimic blood in the urine. I have an enlarged prostate, and there is a family history of kidney stones such as I understand can cause my symptoms as can cancer. I have a routine appointment with my urologist Dec.18th that I’ll try to get moved up. Just trying not to panic here. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Yes, and it will not just go away. Must be treated ASAP. Usually a kidney problem or prostate. You will get antibiotics.
Call your doctor and leave an urgent message! go to ER if this continues or gets worse.
Faint color urine is not as bad as red, and some blood is microscopic and cannot be seen.
Be skeptical of the info on the internet...except for sites like Mayoclinic.

Not me, but my mom. Went for a check up and found she had bladder cancer. Get it checked out!!!

I did once, on New Years eve about fifteen years ago. My urin looked like staight blood and it freaked me out enough I drove myself to the emergency room. Once there they asked for a urine sample and it was still blood red, yet they were never able to diagnose why. By morning I was back to normal.

Hope it turns out OK for you.

I've had blood in my urine, too, and once due to a UTI and sometimes due to chronic liver disease. I need to see a doctor too, but I can't right now. I hope your doctor helps you out and may it not be serious.

Thank you all for sharing your experiences and advice! I called my urologist yesterday and got them to bump my appointment ahead two weeks. After two days of blood in my urine, I am now thankfully free of it but will certainly get checked out and update here when I find out something.

Try not to panic, the cause can be very straightforward. I have a female friend who had this symptom and it turned out to be a kidney infection which needed antibiotics.

However, do see a doctor immediately as it makes no sense not to. Even a simple problem could become pretty serious if you wait too long.

How very scary, I am so glad it was not serious.

I suggest an urgent visit to a doctor, or go
to your nearest A&E department of any
hospital, they will have a Urologist on call.

This can be serious.

This is just an update as promised on my blood in the urine episode that I experienced. I was supposed to get two phases of diagnostics done in December, but the second phase was rescheduled by the urologist for January, and was just performed this week. I had a CT urogram done in December; scary, but not painful with your body inserted up to your head in a scanning tube, and both arms extended out above your head while the machine makes sounds like a UFO powering up for takeoff. I had cystoscopy done this week, which wasn’t pleasant, and the procedure itself caused me to again bleed into my urine afterwards, plus have pain in voiding.

My diagnostics were valuable mostly in ruling things out like cancer, and at least I now know that I’m dealing with a badly enlarged prostate that can actually bleed rather than a tumor, polyps, or stones. I’ll continue on two types of medication, and if I again experience urinary bleeding that doesn’t go away on its own, surgery is my next step up.

I’ve also learned how to read the code that doctors use during a procedure. If you’re told that you “may experience some discomfort” or that “you’ll going to feel some pressure,” it means that the pain train is about to pull into your station! 🙀

Still, I now know what I’m dealing with, and there’s comfort in that…

I’m glad you have some answers. I hope the medicine will clear things up. Yes, you are right—“some discomfort” means you think you are going to die and “some pressure” means you hope you will! i hope you make a full and quick recovery.

It’s too bad that doctors don’t have to experience these procedures at some point early in their careers.

My ex-husband had a similar problem. When he was checked he was diagnosed with acute prostatitis. He took a high-dose course of antibiotics and it helped him. But, his prostatitis became chronic. My brother doctor said that it is necessary to eliminate any inflammation in the prostate, and in general in any organ, that chronic inflammation sooner or later leads to cancer. Treat and do not delay and you'll be all right.
