Blunt trama makes paperwork difficult. Ideas? Thanks

Hello, I’m 65, widowed, I have all I need and I’m comfortable financially.

But a Blunt Force Trama from younger days has made it difficult for me to do paperwork and some detail work. My wife did this before.

Is there any place that one can receive some assistance with general paperwork? Two hours twice a week would be enough.

I’ve have tried several places, including banks and financial agencies that claim they will help. But they are only trying to sell something. Why in the world would I buy something from a person who just lied to me? Just because I was hit on the head doesn’t mean that I’m stupid or I have lost my common sense.

Thank you,

Hi Roger, my sympathy for your loss. Hope you find the help you're needing.

This is an interesting question, Rodger-McArthur. I don't have a direct answer for you but maybe I can offer a few thoughts.

First, I agree with applecruncher's line of thought. Check with the Virginia Department for Aging Services to see if they can offer guidance. https://www.vda.virginia.gov/index.htm Your local hospital and senior center might also have some ideas for you

If by "general paperwork" you mean paying bills, filing, and keeping financial records, possibly a secretarial or bookkeeping service could provide someone. Make absolutely certain that they are fully insured and bonded.

There is always the matter of TRUST. Allowing someone access to your personal financial information involves the risk of wrongdoing. Do you have a trusted family member or friend who could be a second set of eyes overseeing the actions of your paperwork assistant?

Shame you don't live where I live. In my work as an Organizer, I also act as a personal assistant to several families, doing this kind of thing. You might want to check around, maybe your paper, maybe online, for personal assistant type services.

It may not be easy to find one trustworthy person.

See if you can use existing technology to help chip away at the problem.

Check with your bank and find out about automating the process by using direct deposit for your monthly income and automatic payment for the monthly bills.

For monthly prescriptions see if you can have them set up for automatic mailorder every 90 days.

For appointments see if you can be set up for email reminders with your various doctors, dentists, etc...

If you have a specific item or two that are of major concern let us know what they are and maybe we can help you find a solution.

Good luck!!!

Thank you.

Thank you to all. What an amazing web sight this is. I feel like I hit the motherhood of information.

I am completely burnt out and exhausted get so tired of trying to explain what I need. But here its as if everyone understands with out my having to explain over and over again. This feels good, really, really good.

I have learned it is a waste of time trying to explain a great deal. If I have to take a long time explaining the person will never get it anyway. And those who understand, I don’t need to.

Thank you everyone.

Yes.

On the good side I have a solid background in electronics. Everything from banking to bills to the lights turning off and tempature is automated by voice control. Modern technology is life changing.

But sometimes it all needs some one to maintain it and keep it working. And not everything can be automated. Skills that I am no longer good at. Some people say why do you need all of that anyway? Wouldn’t life be easier without it?

The answer is no. Without it I would not even have a fighting chance.

I have contacted the places suggested and left messages. From what I understand hey are so busy that it can take a week or two before they can return messages?

There are some smart people here. When I realized what I was doing I laughed.

I was frustrated because some good people were doing exactly what I asked them to do. ( Sleazy con artist and deceptive opportunistic sales people are in a different category than good people.)

I said I needed some help to accomplish some things. But what I really meant was I wanted help “organizing,” “automating” and “simplifying” my life. I don’t want help, I want help, so I don’t need help.

Damn. You think people would be smart enough not to do what I ask them to do. That's just common sense.

Thanks everyone.

I am curious how the rest if the world is handing situations like this with Seniors.

What I am finding in the United States is incredible people and good programs. And I am also finding thieves, liars, predators, con artist and worse.

The problem is separating the good from the bad. I have survived so many times that I could have been killed I became stoic about it. But I really thought my death certificate should read, "Killed by paperwork." Honest to God, this the absolute truth. And I know for a fact, for many this is the tragic and inexcusable truth.

Yes. We are very lucky.

Thirty years ago I would probably spend my time watching tv until I died. Modern technology, like glasses makes what would have been impossible, possible. I have seen technology can suck the very life out of some people, especially young ones. But for others such as myself, it can open the cage setting us free.

It's closer to the end the the beginning for me. I can't do what I once could. I may crash in a nose dive. I may die in my sleep. I'm ok with all this. But what I'm not ok with is dying at my desk alone doing paperwork and filling out bureaucrat and insurance forms. And it's three days before anyone knows I'm dead because this is all I did with my life.

It not right Seniors have to put up with this. If, with help I can make things simple, these geniuses should be able too. If they wanted to that is.

Hire a secretary or an attorney to handle these things for you. Best of luck. I hate paperwork, too but fortunately I don't have very much of it.
