Body Tatoos/Piercings. Accepted my some and not by others. Your thoughts?

There are tattoos and then there are tattoos. I don’t have any, and don’t want any, but what someone else does is their business. I will say that some tattoos and piercings look very intimidating, which perhaps is the point. I also think it’s a fad which will eventually run its course.

"Wallpaper" tattoos were associated with Japanese gangsters. That alone would put me off.

I got a small one on my upper arm back when I was a sailor in the late 1950s. It doesn't show if I am wearing any kind of shirt. It is a little fuzzy around the edges now.

Allergy to nickel is not uncommon. I can't wear a metal band watch for that reason.

Nose rings, eyebrow rings, lip piercings creep me out. My grand neice had an eyebrow ring. I saw someone on an awards show last night with a nose ring and it just doesn't look attractive to me. Some tattoos are amazing. I don't know how people sit for all of that. And some tattoos are gorgeous.

Oh wait...that's Dwayne Johnson. Well the tattoo is nice too. 😛

I find face tattoos and face piercing scary. Anyway, what people do with their own skin is up to them and I try not to stare. Cultural tattoos are different because they have a deep meaning for those folks. In my early twenties I was tempted to have a tiny blue butterfly on my right ankle. However, I was shoe modelling in Italy at the time and was told I cannot. I’m glad I don’t have one now.

I have a tattoo. It was my 60th birthday present to myself.

Nobody has to look at it except the Spousal Equivalent and, on occasion, my doctor.

My older great-granddaughter doesn't approve. She saw me in the shower when she was about 2 1/2 and ran to her mother screeching "MEEMAW WRITED ON HERSELF! SHE NOT S'POSED TO!!!" On the other hand, the 3-year-old wants one of her own.

I have no issues with tattoos or piercings that others choose to have. I have one small tattoo that can only be seen if I wear a French cut bikini, which I haven't worn in almost 40 years. I still love it, it is light pastel colors and has had little to no sun exposure over the years. I had my ears pierced decades ago, but I don't wear earrings, so I'm not even sure the holes are still open.

I had the proverbial "COOL DUDE" earing in my left ear while hanging out in Harlem in the 50's until I saw a hype pull one out of a guys ear. Also betwixt and between marriages a girl friend wanted me to get a tattoo of a scorpion. I passed because of the associated pain involved and well so because some time later when I moved to the appendix of America I actually got stung by one.

On with the show:

When I first hired on with the Sheriff's Dept it was frowned upon for employees to have tattoos, you would be relegated to wearing strictly long-sleeve uniform shirts if sporting tattoos on visible areas of your body.

Personally I've thought tattoos like the one shown are tacky and disrespectful of the American flag, a sign of a pseudo patriot, not one who is committed to a United States of America.

Higher numbers of people in the SFBA have always gotten tattoos, especially with counterculture folks. Like most else concerning cultural choices, I'm a "Let it Be" person. On a personal level, I've never wanted a body tattoo and would choose a woman without tattoos versus one that does, all else equal. Now face tattoos and jewelry anywhere on the face, is a negative due to the cultural history I've lived and been visually exposed to.

typo error in topic title.

Accepted by some, not my some.
Back in my Navy days tats in foreign ports were strongly discouraged -- presumably because tattooing in a non-medical environment was known to transmit disease, most likely venereal. May not be a problem anymore, at least in first world countries, but I never got one, and can't think of a good reason why I should.

I don't have any tattoos or piercings. I don't want any holes I wasn't born with.
But I don't care how many of them other people have. Everyone is entitled to satisfy their craving for attention.

If a person wants to look like a walking freak show, that's his business. If someone has a tat or two and maybe a single piercing, depending where it is, I don't care one way or the other. My body is clean without any tats or piercings. In my early years of being in the military, it was almost expected of you to get a tat. I was able to avoid having any done, only because I didn't want any.

Personally, I don't like them but it's something mankind has done for a long time. It was partly tribal, to show your identity and is still done for that reason in many parts of the world.

I have a number of “executive“ tattoos, all thematic, invisible under normal clothing, and rendered professionally by a respected artist. A small stylized fox even runs under my watch band…

I have double holes in each ear which are adorned with the gorgeous diamond jewelry Ron has given me. My next piercing will be a nose stud, I think they’re stunning when they’re tiny and delicate. That will also be a tiny diamond.

I have a bunch of ink. Every tattoo I have is deeply meaningful to me. The last one was my wedding tattoo, Ron and I got matching ones. His thumbprint one in the shape of a heart on my inner wrist, and mine on his, slightly enlarged to show detail.

I designed these to honor both my heritage and motherhood.

I have no tattoos, and plan to get none. At first when the latest trend started I disliked them on others, but have adjusted.

Except for my great-nephew who has "Fear God" tattooed on his face, quite large and visibly. Don't like that at all, but mostly I feel sorry for him, I believe his day of regret is coming and I feel bad for him for that.

Henna and ink tattoos are another thing. Always supported the grandkids doing it and got a few myself. Tattoos that wash off in a few days can be fun. In fact I can still see some of what the surgeon wrote on my legs pre-op right now.

Tattoos have been around for thousands of years, Ötzi the Iceman had them on his ~5,000 year old skin, the oldest skin found that could show tattoos I think. Probably will be so long as humans last. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ötzi

Only pierced ears for me when I was 17. I have two holes, wear a gold stud and usually a hoop in each ear, small or large depending on the day and occasion.

As for tattoos, each to his own, but I dislike them. Why put ink under your skin? Arm sleeves, around your neck? Why?
I don't understand it, but then, I don't have to.:unsure::D

In the TV series, Breaking Bad, Jesse Pinkman falls in love with a gal that draws tattoos. She works for a parlor, but she doesn't actually do the tattooing. She just creates complicated and enchanting designs. Jesse asks her if SHE has any tattoos, and she replies, "Nah, it's too much of a commitment."
