BongBong Marcos is running for President in the Philippines

Hopefully discussing the politics of other countries is okay on this forum. I just saw a story about the upcoming Philippines presidential election. I have always been interested in this because my partner is Filipino, although he moved to the States when he was 5 y/o. There is a Filipino Esprit De Corps so he always knows what is going on in his country of birth as well.

I'm sure you remember Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos, who implemented Martial Law during their reign, tanked the economy and sucked the poor Filipino people dry. They are long gone. For the past 6 years, Duterte has been in power. No comment on that one.

Anyway, the Marcos' son, BongBong Marcos is running for President. Many younger Filipinos seem to have no idea what his parents did during their administration and he may very well be elected. Apparently, Filipinos are very much on Social Media and he is planting false stories that paint his parents in a great light.

Anyway, not sure how many are interested but I just found the story fascinating. The public does indeed have a short memory.

I have been reading about the new wave of Marcos for at least 10 years. Just sickening. Since your partner is Filipino and this issue must be very painful for him...and you....just wanted you to know that, you know, there are folks out here who get it and really worry for the Filipino people.

My acupuncturist is Filipino. Has taken me out of endless pain. Real hero to me.

Thinking about the Filipino people living under the thumb of horrible humans is just endlessly disturbing.
 
How can you vote against a guy named BongBong?

Well I guess there are a few reasons.

My father lived and worked in the Philippines in the 70s and 80s, met the Marcos once at a dinner. He didn't think much of them politically, but he did say he was quite impressed by Ferdinand's presence, he got everyone's attention and sounded very reasonable, credible and likeable. BongBong probably got some of that charisma.
 
I don't believe the sins of the parents should be visited on the son. However if BongBong is in fact corrupt and dictatorial, then this is bad news indeed. Filipinos are great people and they don't deserve this.

Not long after the Marcos were deposed I went on a tour of the Palace (Malacanang), got to see the shoe collection. Not real impressive, mostly cheap shoes from Philippine shoemakers.

Much more impressive was the huge collection of empty jewelry boxes. The good shoes probably went the way of the jewels.
 
Setting aside the politics of the family/name it funny how people gravitate to the children of celebrities in general. The Kardashians father made his fame getting OJ off and passed never able to capitalize on his story yet his daughters have the world, money, fame etc at their finger tips.
 
I might be wrong here but while in Hawaii I think somone showed me where Ferdinand Marcos's grave was. He was hated so much he was kicked out of his country. The young voters wouldn't remember that when the Marcos' were kicked out and people went into their palace, they found Mrs. Marcos has something like over 550 pairs of shoes. Maybe she had "Shoe Fetish." I bet all the shoe sales people in The Philippines simply adored her.

Maybe their son has seen the light, time will tell.
