When I was a kid I was watching Tarzan with my dad. I was quite a swimmer at that time already but not very bright evidently. In one particular scene Tarzan was swimming in a swamp and I say “that guy doesn’t really know how to swim!” Dad replies, “That’s Johnny Weissmuller, an Olympic gold medalist swimmer!” Things got quiet.

Weissmuller was born on June 2, 1904, in Timisoara, which was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He emigrated with his family to the United States when he was a child and later became a competitive swimmer. Weissmuller's swimming career began at age 17, and he quickly established himself as one of the best swimmers in the world. He won five Olympic gold medals and set 67 world records during his career. After retiring from swimming, he starred in 12 Tarzan films between 1932 and 1948 and was widely regarded as the definitive screen Tarzan.


 
When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time with my grandma. Besides looking after me, she was always busy cooking or cleaning something. But on Saturday afternoon, if there was a Tarzan movie on, everything stopped, and she sat down in her rocker and was glued to the TV. She loved Tarzan! 😊
 
Johnny Weissmuller was the most "believable" Tarzan, but I had the hots for Lex Barker. Ron Ely was the TV Tarzan but just didn't cut it. And then there were a host of others, including Buster Crabbe.

Funniest "Tarzan" was when a Turkish filmmaker took the 1938 movie, "Tarzan's Revenge" and superimposed the face of a Turkish actor over the original actor's face (very, very poorly), dubbed it in Turkish, and released it illegally as a new movie.

My grandmother had all the original books, and I spent hours reading. When I saw the films (any of them), I didn't recognise them as the figure that Edgar Rice Burroughs had created in my mind.
