Don't know if Buddy Holly is spinning in his grave or proud. A song I just added to my IPod was "Chantilly Lace". In those days there was no auto-tune, a singer had to carry it themselves. I think The Big Bopper was awesome. Me and my son often talk music. He'll suggest interesting stuff and I'll give him history lessons.
Today I played the American Bandstand video of The Bopper. He was surprised that the mummified Dick Clark of New Year's past used to be so youthful. Then I connected it to Richie Valens. Then the Los Lobos version of "La Bamba" and he wants that in the music library.
Then I mentioned Buddy Holly and how they were the first Rock n' Roll deaths of note. Ironic but just at that moment my son said " Hey wait Buddy Holly, I think I know something by him". My boy was born in 1995, Buddy Holly is history for him. Elton John is history to his generation.
But more than fifty years later...there was a Buddy Holly song called "Atomic Bomb Baby" and it's on the soundtrack of the video game he was playing at the moment. Lots of mayhem and destruction but maybe Buddy would be proud he's still significant to the youth of today.
