If someone brought a dog to my house, I would be thrilled. I would say yes to anyone who wanted to visit me and bring their dog, as long as I know the person. I don't care what the reason is. Large dogs and terriers are particularly welcome. When you asked someone to dinner, how would you feel if someone arrived with their dog?
Or what would you say if they called ahead and asked to bring a pet?
If the reason given was that they like their pet so just wanted to bring it along.
Now that I read Jules's post, I would not allow anyone to bring an untrained dog to my house. Give me a break! If your dog isn't housebroken, or is so untrained that it could injure someone or cause problems, rub a brain cell or two together and don't take them to someone's house. If you are a person who doesn't treat their dog well, including ignoring the dog, don't bring him to me. Because I will hate you afterward for not being kind to your dog. And no, you don't have to yell at it or hit it to be unkind.
The only trained protection dog I know is Loki, my nephew's 140 lb pressa canario. Loki has a special bond with me. I don't know why other than I was delighted to meet him and he picked up on that. (I was also leery and bit afraid, but I controlled my emotional response to him so he didn't know it.)
When I am around, no one else exists for him. As much as I adore Loki, I would never bring him to anyone's house, especially if they have pets or small children. I don't think Loki would do anything wrong, but that isn't enough. He could conceivably be too dangerous, so I would not take the chance.
I don't need Loki to protect me, except if I am in an alley at night and there are strange people hanging out there. That's not gonna happen, so I'm good.
