A former British soldier who fought alongside Ukrainian troops before being captured and tortured by Russian soldiers is suing the Kremlin for compensation for his treatment.

Top London lawyers, as well as Ukrainian lawyers, for Shaun Pinner, 50, filed a suit to a judge in Solomyanskiy District Court in Kyiv on Friday, claiming that Russia owes him money for the way he was treated while a prisoner of war.

He signed up to be a contracted soldier in Ukraine's military in 2018, rising through the ranks after serving with the British Army for nine years, fighting in both Bosnia and later as a volunteer against ISIS.

He was captured by Russian forces during the siege of Mariupol in April 2022.

A 'supreme court' in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic initially sentenced the former soldier and two others to death, but he was freed in a prisoner swap last year, along with three other UK fighters.

He's lucky just to be alive. Good fortune was on his side. I wonder for those who were not so blessed. Good luck in his lawsuit. Win or loose, I'd be interested in how he plans to collect the judgement.

If you think you can sue Vladimir Putin and get a kopeck out of him, you are a better man than me! I don't think ole Vlad is going to lose much sleep over this bit of news.

The funniest part is..despite being English, he's not even going to be suing from here... but as a Ukrainian citizen.. ha ! ..I think he got Brain damage...
