Broken bones

How many of our members have had broken bones ,I was so lucky I’d never broken any bones in my life till March this year. at 75 ( not good )

I was casually walking to our car that was parked against a kerb in a suburban street stepped off a cement footpath into a dirt part of the footpath to get in the car ,and stepped in a hole I didn’t realise was there it just looked like the rest of the dirt area but it was in fact a deep hole filled with tiny gum nuts from the street trees .
I broke my leg bone ( luckily the smaller bone ) 4 inch spiral fracture right through the bone ,
as well as my ankle ,

I’d thought I’d just sprained my ankle so left it for 5 days until I could no longer stand the pain before seeking medical assistance .
This was 9 weeks ago so I haven’t been in The mood to play games on forum with putting up,with plaster on my leg then a horrible 1.5 kg mood boot for 4 weeks which effected my knee and hip having it on 23 hours day.

I might sound like I’m grizzling but I’m not it’s sorta a warning just how quickly a accident can happen to anyone
I can tell you it’s not fun being in horrific pain from 2 broken bones from a simple slip up us seniors don’t need.

I buy and wear good quality shoes however I had open sandals on that day and if one slips like I did they won’t protect your ankles

Oh wow, I'm sorry your leg got broken. It sounds so painful. I broke my foot and ankle a few years back missing one of the back steps and flying down. It takes so long to get better I know.
I’m on the mend now thank goodness ,@Ruthanne I bought myself a knee scooter to get around for when I really HAD to go out , Hubby can’t cook so I’d have to go shopping with him to,get food and the scooter made it possible mind you they are not all that comfortable the kneeling part is to hard and the knee even with a wool cover on it D4C519FA-9992-41DC-B219-366E8148038E.jpeg

How are you going to dance with a broken paw? I’m so sorry you are going through this.
Broken bones really hurt. I’ve broken ribs, fingers, a wrist and my tailbone, all before the age of 17.
No dancing for a while …..I’ve just started having physio as I was only allowed to throw the moon boot away about 10 days ago , he said it would be at least Oct / Nov till I could even think about
putting my dancing shoes on as the swelling won’t recede for months

Oh dear. October / November is quite a ways away. Inflammation is certainly a factor to consider. This is so true. Hey but your new wheels look quite attractive. At least you have something that can help you get around. Try and keep your spirit up Kadee and enjoy the summer anyway. Then again, you are in Australia 🇦🇺 so it will be winter. Oh dear. 😬
Do you have a nice big sock or slipper to at least keep your foot warm ?

I bought myself a pair of slippers with a Velcro tab on them so it’s adjustable and is reasonably comfortable .
I keep my foot up when sitting and have to wear a elastic tubular bandage ( doubled ) to help reduce the swelling 4CAF9385-EEE6-4124-8CB6-464A65B519BC.jpeg

Well there you go. You’ve got this. Good stuff. I wish you a speedy recovery. You’ll be dancing again before you know it. 💃 🕺 Stay safe. Stay strong.

I broke a wrist bone as a kid roller skating and 5 ribs on a motorcycle as an adult. It's no fun so I take more care than I used to in everything.

Wishing a speedy recovery Kadee46. 🏃‍♀️

Wishing you a full and speedier than the doc thinks recovery, @Kadee46 !

And also wishing someone had told you about the iWalkFree instead of the scooter. Easy to use and keeps you active while keeping the rest of the body in anatomically correct alignment while a lower extremity injury heals.

@Kadee46 This has been an ordeal for you. Glad you’re on the better part of the the mending now.

@AnnieA I’ve never had to think about something like this. Now adding it to my memory bank (brain) in the event something ever happens.

Thank you for sharing all of this with us, Kadee, so we can all learn something, from details you did include.

So sorry you've had to go through this. I hope you mend more quickly than expected.

@AnnieA I’ve never had to think about something like this. Now adding it to my memory bank (brain) in the event something ever happens.

I made a thread and included "hands free crutches" in the title so when someone *ouch* does need to pull from the memory bank, hopefully it'll be easy to find. For people who meet the criteria, these things are great for recuperation. Keeps you active which helps healing and also lessens need for PT since you're in anatomically correct alignment. So much of PT is working with muscles, ligaments and tendons away! from the actual injury that got out of whack from misuse.

Thread: iWALK hands free crutches

I know your frustration. I apparently had several rib fractures when I was younger that got misdiagnosed and recently refractured one of them. I was off work for 6 wks. and in excruciating pain. Couldn't even hardly get dressed. Now I think I have some sort of nerve damage or irritation in my leg opposite the fracture because for 2 months I could only sleep on the fracture side. There are no casts or anything they can do for ribs. I don't blame you for being in a horrible mood. Mine is still cranky. I quit wearing sandals years ago.

Why was there a hole near the curb to begin with? Do you know? It's not the sandals fault. LOL! Sometimes life just happens whether we want it to or not. Hope you're all better really soon. *Hugs*

If every time I broke a bone I was given £100 I would be well off in my old age.
Broken both hips, both arms, plus three verterbra and cracked three ribs, apart from wrist and ankle breaks over the years. My bones are SO porous now through Osteoporosis I have just had a bone infusion.
One hip was broken in three places and never healed so that it has left me very disabled with one leg shorter than the other by 4 inches. I could not have replacement hip because I was told with the state of my bones it would not last.
I was 91 last week but still here to tell the tale. Best wishes to all.
