Bronx Building Explosion, Fire and Partial Collapse 01/18/2022

Yes. NYC firefighters are among the bravest smoke eaters known to modern man . May The Good Lord bless and keep them safe.
I know only too well, my ex became a London Firefighter after he left the Royal Navy, until he retired ... I could tell you stories that would curl your hair.. there's many things the average joe don't know the horrors (aside from actual fires and burned souls) that firefighters have to deal with...

I hear you. In my short stint with the original premerger NYC-EMS before getting hired on Penn-Central I've been witness to things that I still can't believe and I was born and raised in NYC. I bet you were and still are proud of him.

he's my ex, but yes I'm still proud of all his achievements in saving lives...and putting his and his crews' life in serious danger every day of their lives

This seems to be a really bad year for New York fires. I wonder if some of the older buildings have reached a dangerous state the way some of the Miami buildings are starting to collapse. Then the cold weather brings out dangerous ways of heating apartments like space heaters, too.

These older neighborhoods have so much history and character, but if they've become fire traps something will have to be done.

Very true. IMHO fighting fires in New York City in the Colder months with snow, sleet, freezing rain and ice has to be physically and psychologically taxing but I would presume that explosions and structure collapses with people trapped would truly be the worst to contend with. Listening to FDNY on Broadcastify and Openmhz it appears that a fairly large percentage of FDNY calls are gas leaks and odors of gas. Historically NYC structures were using gas supplied by Brooklyn Union Gas now KeySpan as primary sources for heating, cooking appliances and clothes dryers now KeySpan along with ConEd handles gas and electric distribution. Many fire related deaths in tenements during the colder seasons are attributed to failing to secure doors, improper use of space heaters and trying to escape fires using windows with locked or welded shut burglar bars. FDNY has been using High Rise trucks and Heavy Rescue collapse trucks to minimize severe injuries and deaths.

Tragic and frustrating. Town homes ie just like apartment because a problem in just one home or unit can affect everybody.

I think this is the one that 911 had just received a call about a gas smell.

Maybe some basic measures. Maybe if one smells gas they should start propping windows or opening doors just before or after they call 911. Looks like their might have been a build up. If not disabled could evacuate as well.

Wonder if that was an existing issue or just developed.

It seems that Every Winter, there is an increase in major residential fires....especially in lower income housing...often due to gas leaks and improper use of Space Heaters, etc. Landlords in these rental units perform minimum maintenance and upkeep, and the residents have to live with the consequences.
