Brown Sugar

A few weeks ago, my wife was making a batch of chocolate chip cookies....my favorite "addiction"...and when she was finished, she had a few ounces of brown sugar left over, and was thinking about tossing it. Instead, I told her to save it, and I would use it. The next morning, I put some in my morning coffee, and was amazed at the taste, That night, at Supper, I used it in my iced tea, and again, I was surprised. Since then, I have virtually stopped using regular sugar, and just use the brown sugar in my morning coffee, and evening tea.

Doing a little research, it appears that the brown sugar contains a percentage of Molasses, and is derived and processed differently than the regular white sugar. There are several websites that discuss the Health benefits of brown sugar, and I think that they are correct. I notice there are many people who are using these artificial sweeteners, and I suggest that they might try using this far more natural means of adding some taste to their beverages. I think this will be part of my "diet" from now on.

Interesting, Don. It gonna try tomorrow morning just for the heck of it.

Oh - to keep brown sugar from getting hard put a couple large marshmallows in the bag.

That’s right Don. Brown sugar has molasses in it and is better for you, especially if you get Demerara Brown Sugar.
I like to use honey and maple syrup as well as a bit of stevia. Of course it depends what I’m sweetening. When I make my gingerbreads I use brown sugar and molasses but then it calls for that. :p
I don’t particularly care for artificial sweeteners either.

Suggesting brown sugar instead of artificial sweeteners is not good for diabetics. They have to keep their blood sugar level in check.

For me. I don't add any sweeteners to my coffee. Just a bit of cream.

I bake my own muffins and add sunflower seeds and a few chocolate chips.

I don’t believe brown sugar was suggested for diabetics. It was only suggested , in ‘general’ that it’s better for you than artificial sweeteners and being a retired nutritionist I have to agree.

Better than artificial sweeteners? It depends on why you are taking artificial sweeteners. You can't generalize.

None at all may be better for you.

Yes, sorry for not being more specific. For non diabetics, a bit of brown sugar, honey, molasses, maple syrup, stevia is better than artificial sugar. For diabetics, most can handle a bit of natural sugar but that has to do with how diabetic they are.

The problem with relying on artificial sweeteners is that people get use to everything being really sweet. Even most diabetics would do better cutting down on high carbs , processed foods and artificial sugar. Artificial sugar isn’t good for human consumption but I do understand that diabetics often choose it because it’s what’s been recommended by their doctors and/or is what they are use to. Keeping blood sugar level stable is crucial for the diabetic so I don’t criticize them for their choices.

Bottom line : none at all ‘would’ be better but it’s just not practical either. Life needs to be enjoyable too.

I just bought some sugar in the raw. Very crunchy. It tastes a little like brown sugar. They also sell it in packets. I've been playing around with it, like mixing it with peanuts. :playful:

Exactly !!...So many / too many of the health 'helps' / must eat / do not eat / advise, leaves folks with a food as fuel only attitude / conclusion. Food should also IMO be enjoyed, and is quite often a huge ingredient in our social / family lives. Sometime the advise guide / warnings make us damn near afraid to even walk past it in the store....:)

Its funny what you can get used to. Coffee with sugar now tastes terrible. Same with salt. Hardly ever use it to season food now.

That is so true plus it’s a great strategy even for those non diabetic. That’s smart .
