Burning DVD’s for my brother

Mr. Ed

Be what you is not what you what you ain’t
Location
Central NY
My brother, 3 yrs younger than me is afraid of technology. Growing up he quit high school and took his GED test scoring highest in the state of Ga, went to work as an electrician and made good money. However, he refuses to learn any type of technology that involves computers or smartphones.
He doesn’t know what he is missing and it is frustrating to me trying to explain things to him in a way he can comprehend.

I have an old girlfriend the same way. She has a dumb phone…refuses to use a computer…. She is lonely and isolated and refuses to see how a few simple changes would improve her life.

Just tell your brother to make sure to put the DVDs over some cardboard and wood that has been soaked with gas before lighting. :)

But seriously, creating DVDs that actually play where you want can be quite tricky. I have done it, but every new computer I get presents a new challenge. A better, easier, option would be to write the file onto a USB drive that practically every modern tv or computer can play. Or write onto an SD card, but this would not play on a tv.

Yep, I have a macOS I bought in 2013, every time there is an upgrade Apple inserts additional privacy and protection standards making more difficult to do things on the computer than with the original mac ox platform.

I use a licensed version of ExpressBurn, I originally purchased from Apple App Store lifetime support Cisdern dvd burner which only included disc burning software instead the whole package that you buy online, couldn’t get my money back either. What a waste…

I down videos from YouTube with alasoft downloader converter and other sources. ExpressBurn does a good job most of the time but not every video file will burn to dvd disc no mater how many times I encode the files. So I end up wasting about half the blank discs I set out to burn.

The second batch of DVD's I sent ended up in New Orleans LA due to illegible penmanship. They are currently being returned to me for new packaging and a readable address destination.

I'm in the same boat as your brother. I've a flip phone that I barely know how to use, but I can figure out how to fix most things mechanical or build things out of wood or steel.
My thinker just doesn't work for tech. If it wasn't for my wife keeping my pc going, I wouldn't even be typing this.

Isn't that something? My first exposure to computers was in 2005 and with a bit of trial and error I gained confidence and took off from there. My brother is super smart but he doesn't want anything to do with technology.

Well hell, my DVD's to my brother were lost in the mail. Back to the drawing board. My penmanship is atrocious and no one can read it including myself

I was brought up and computers and electronics and worked with them virtually all my working life. Now, I have as little as possible to do with technology. Too much is just technology for technology's sake. Yes,the computer is useful for shopping etc. because I live in a small village with few local amenities, but I don't use social media - unless this counts, or stream videos, play games etc..
I have a basic mobile phone and a 'point and shoot' camera. The 'Alexa' that I got free, ended up, never out of its box, in a charity shop.

Essential technology to me is a cordless drill and an electrical test meter,

We had a rather 'far sighted' maths teacher who started to teach us the basics of computer programming in 1978. Of course there were very vew computers around, so we travelled to our local technology college where we had access to a 32k - yes a whole 32k of core storage. Our programs were written on punched tape. I studied Electrical and electronic engineering at Uni where I learned my first 'proper' computer language, Fortran.

As for burning disks, not many machines have slots for disks, so it's copying to USB sticks instead.

I started in highschool back in the 70s, and even my dad taught me a few tips. It was completely different then and real fun and challenging.

I have a buddy who hates technology and I had to drag him kicking and screaming into it. He works for the government and needs technology to handle all his insurance, pay and other information. I got tired doing it for him. He's okay now, but I still have to keep on him to make sure he runs routine updates and security.

I live in NY my brother lives in Ga. If I were able I would not let him rest until he learned how to compute.
