Cable bill went up again

Hubby is a TV-Aholic, therefore we have all cable channels. I will be fine with just a few channels. I prefer reading or listening to music over tv. However, there are a few shows on tv that I enjoy. Cable is way toooo much

Often, if you threaten to cut your cable and go to another provider .. suddenly, they will miraculously offer you a terrific deal. It has happened with our cable company a few times.
This is true in my experience with Cox cable internet. Year after year, whenever they increase our bill, I called to cancel and I was immediately transferred to promotions department. They'd tell me the same spiel that I've been their valued customer for years so they are giving me a "special" promo which is the same amount I've been paying for the last 5 yrs or so. They'd give me an expiration date for such special price hoping by the time it comes, I'd forget to call so the new price sticks.Since I don't put these bills on autopay, i know exactly when a bill increases and deal with the company asap.

Almost $5. I am now paying close to $220 a month for cable service. I compared to last month and the increase was in the broadcast TV surcharge. Of course when that increases, so does the tax, so it adds up.

I've never paid one cent to watch TV.

I live in the boonies and have a large rooftop antenna so I can pick up OTA channels 30-some miles away. When OTA went digital in 2009 I upgraded my antenna. OTA channels are adding new ones on a regular basis and I now get about two dozen hi-def channels all free -- just like when we were kids, that people seem to have forgotten about.

Then I started streaming in 2016 and with that, I have more channels than I could ever possibly watch -- all free. Of course I could subscribe to some of the more popular ones available with streaming, but I see no reason to.

Ask to speak to someone in the 'loyalty ' dept. Tell them you've bn a long time customer and see what they can do to offer you some savings on your bill.
I've done this many times...and they will offer you something for the year.
It might help, and at the very least, make you feel better...for awhile.

Does Amazon Prime have good stuff on its streaming channel, Don?
Yes, but not as good as Netflix, kind of on par with Hulu. It is getting better though. Like I mentioned earlier, we got it because it came with Prime 2 day free shipping. Considering all 3, the offerings are pretty good. Have to be careful not to wait too long to watch the shows you're interested in as offerings come and go on a monthly basis (I'm looking at you Netflix) :) . I hope that helps? Don...

Shows I love on Amazon Prime: Sneaky Pete, the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, and am currently on season 4 of The Americans, which originally ran on FXX. Sometimes I watch Am.Prime more than Netflix, sometimes it's the other way around.

Deb I owe you an apology. Those sites are not free to watch. You still have to have cable to access them. I misspoke and I apologize.

Is that $220 just for cable or does it include internet and phone? If it's just for cable that is truly ridiculous, well even for all three it is. And this is why I dropped cable; did it the last time they raised the bill in 2018. I have access to more programming since I cut the chord than I would have if I was paying for the basic cable package, what I'd finally downgraded to before I cut. Streaming is a great thing. I can watch what I want, when I want and most of it is commercial free. My Roku serves me well too @deesierra. :)

It bundled.
That's still too high. But if you feel you can't do without the channels you mentioned, guess you'll be stuck with it. I found out quite by accident when I was trying to decide whether or not to try an indoor antenna, that my HDTV gets great reception without cable or an antenna because the digital receiver is in the set. I don't know if the Roku box helps with the reception because I've always had Roku connected to that T.V.
