California Home Owners Association Mandates Garage Door Must Remain Open

A home owners association in Auburn California is mandating that people leave their garage door open between 8-4 during the day after some people were caught living in a garage. The new policy increases chances of theft of items in garage to say the least.

To top it off the people caught living in the garage were there with the owners knowledge so it doesn't seem like squatting or a criminal/civil issue. Maybe a code violation but that's what the town code enforcement is for.

A very similar thing is happening all over London...and they also have (usually ) illegal immigrants living in sheds in their back gardens..sometimes as many as a dozen at a time... Although the authorities know it's happening and are trying to address the situation it's just too huge for them to catch everyone..but a good start would be for them to have them keep their garage doors open all day as suggested in Auburn California. However I can't see it being do-able.. because so many law abiding people keep not only their car in the garage but very often just use their garages for storage, so no-one will want to have all their stuff on view for thieves ..

My daughter lives in Auburn,California. I`ll have to ask her about this. I doubt it`s her neighborhood though-I don`t believe they have a homeowners association.

Not surprised people are living in garages there though. Both the real estate market and the rental markets in Auburn are as tight as can be. Just not enough housing for all the people who want to live there.

On a similar note,a few weeks ago,I was on the site Spokeo and was putting in addresses on the street I grew up on in the San Francisco Bay Area. Having been in most of the homes on that street,I know that most all have finished basements that could easily be converted to second units. Looking at the names of the people who live in these homes now, almost every one lists up to 6 adults living there. This was never the case when I was growing up there. In fact, the only address I found that only listed one family is the one right next door to my house, and the occupant is the grandson of the original owner, who lived there when I was a child, along with her adult daughter, who then owned it,and now her son,who was born when I was 8.

At our house, I guess we could just move the portable generator, welding outfit, metal lathe, Lawn tractor, snow blower, tool chests, etc. out by the end of the driveway. Make it easier for people to pick through and take what they wanted. If we went off with friends during the day, they could also jack up our car and remove the wheels and tires.

Sounds like a hair-brained idea to me, I suppose that you could hope that your neighbors would keep an eye on your property, while you're away but that would depend on how much confidence you have in your neighbors?? Hope the idea doesn't come to our town.:nightmare:

Interesting. Our HOA rules state that we can't leave our garage door open for extended periods. (Can't recall right offhand what the time limit is.) :D Of course, we ignore that since we are rebels.

You know the next rule that HOA makes will be about what can be stored in your garage and how neatly it must be arranged. People tend to get themselves elected to HOA boards because they want to control everyone around them.

I'd never live in a HOA development and I'd never leave my garage door open all day, that to me is insane and asking for trouble.

Agreed - and I would sue.. I suspect someone will down there. That's just nuts. I keep too many tools etc. in there. I would never live in that kind of developement. I feel I should have control of what happens in and about my home (within the limits of the law.)
