A California Insurance Company paid off an elderly plaintiff in a lawsuit for assault with a check and buckets of coins($21,000 worth). Adriana's Insurance Service Inc lost a lawsuit where one of it's employees supposedly beat up an elderly client.

It took 8 employees to put the buckets of coins at the client's house & attorney's office.

She won a lawsuit and got paid,whats the problem?

Actually a he but essentially you are correct since the lawsuit didn't stipulate form of payment if victorious.

BUT it is usually standard practice for a business to pay in checks. Think about what that company did. They probably had to make a special trip to the bank to withdrawal 21K in coins AND get employees to pick up and deliver it. Article says it took 8 employees, a van, 5 gallon bucketS($5-10 each at your average hardware store), two tripS/drop offS at the client's house and lawyer's office and paid the balance on a check anyway. They knew in advance this was a senior citizen. I don't care if you have a cash business. Who keeps 5 gallons buckets of coins laying around.

This was all about being vindictive. Most banks charge a fee for coin counting now a days. And the man and/or his lawyer will have to arrange the pick up and transportation of those coins just like the company did. And if you read the complaint boards this company is hated-besides lying apparently they fee/service charge you to death. I can't believe they have 50 offices.

That is not legal over here. He should check the legislation where he lives.

CURRENCY ACT 1965 - SECT 16

Legal tender

(1) A tender of payment of money is a legal tender if it is made in coins that are made and issued under this Act and are of current weight:

(a) in the case of coins of the denomination of Five cents, Ten cents, Twenty cents or Fifty cents or coins of 2 or more of those denominations--for payment of an amount not exceeding $5 but for no greater amount;

(b) in the case of coins of the denomination of One cent or Two cents or coins of both of those denominations--for payment of an amount not exceeding 20 cents but for no greater amount;

(c) in the case of coins of a denomination greater than Fifty cents but less than Ten dollars--for payment of an amount not exceeding 10 times the face value of a coin of the denomination concerned but for no greater amount;

(d) in the case of coins of the denomination of Ten dollars--for payment of an amount not exceeding $100 but for no greater amount; and

(e) in the case of coins of another denomination--for payment of any amount.

(2) For the purposes of subsection (1), a coin shall be deemed to be not of current weight if it has become diminished in weight by wear or otherwise so as to be of less weight than the weight prescribed as the least current weight of that coin.

He should demand the insurance company collect the coins and supply a bank cheque for the same value.
Let them bank the coins.

Outrageous behavior on the part of the insurance company. A boycott is in order...

Ill bet that insurance company will get a AAA rating soon.
Its these ridiculous lawsuits brought on by the lawyers that causes our insurance premiums to go up every damn year.

Adriana's Insurance Service Inc can't even get accreditation by the Better Business Bureau of California.

The complaint boards have had complaints ranging from lying, price gouging and mistreatment of employees. An example.

The lawsuit was because a company employee assaulted the plaintiff who filed and won. The insurance company itself was sued which is different pool of money or should be anyway. This sounds like a high pressure predatory insurance brokerage.
