California will not get tossed into the ocean

Here’s some comforting words for every California resident contemplating a permanent relocation.

The USGS calls the the idea that the state will be swept out to sea “absolutely impossible.”

What will continue to happen however, is the slow — about two-inches-per-year slow — northward movement of southwestern California toward Alaska, as it slides past central and eastern California.

“The Pacific Plate is moving to the northwest with respect to the North American Plate,” USGS says.

So one day, in 15 million years nevertheless, Los Angeles and San Francisco will be neighbors. And a couple million years after that, LA homes will sport Alaska zip codes.

There's other interesting facts about EQs in this article, like the ground doesn't really "open up", just cracks, and standing in a doorway is no longer considered a safe place.

The article also says:
Your pet may act strange during earthquakes

That does not mean it knows an earthquake is coming.

According to the Seismological Society of America, there is no strong evidence behind the claim that cats, dogs and other animals go crazy before an earthquake.

A report by the society reviewed nearly 200 publications referring to abnormal animal behavior before quakes and notes the animals’ strange behaviors occurred “anywhere from seconds to months prior to the earthquakes, and at distances from a few to hundreds of kilometers from the earthquake origins.”

And without long-term data and observations of animals, researchers are still not sure whether the unusual behaviors relate to earthquakes or some other kind of chance in the animals’ populations.

Well, just going by my own experience, when I lived in Washington state (we were right on a major fault line!), one day I saw several raccoons slowly walking across our yard in broad daylight, something that literally never happens. About an hour later, we had an earthquake.

Were they in single file, @Sunny ? Because then, I would be certain! :)

Kidding aside, I think you did see an example of the phenomenon!

When people make fun of California what goes through my mind is:
Don't hate me 'cause you ain't me.

There isn't any place on the planet without some negatives, and that's certainly true of every state in the US.

There are some in California who suggest that we secede from the U.S. A dumb idea in my opinion. Didn't the South try that once? There are also some who would like to break the state up into smaller states, also a dumb idea. There are all kinds of people and ideas in California. That's what makes it interesting. My immediate neighbors include an East Indian family, a black family from Kenya, a family from Guatemala, one from Viet Nam, a Mexican lady, and a guy who was born in Germany. There are a lot of Koreans in out town. The thing about California is the variety. You want hippies? We got em. Tea partiers? Those too. But, mostly it's just ordinary folks like you and me trying to get by and get along.

Perhaps in a million years, California might become an "island". The question now is how many times will people who live in the earthquake zone be willing, or afford to rebuild?? I doubt that most insurance policies cover such expenses, unless the policy holder is willing to pay a heft surcharge on their insurance...similar to what those living in flood prone areas have to pay for flood insurance.

In California, Insurance companies have to offer quake coverage. It is not cheap and the deductible is very high. I expect it is similar to tornado, hurricane, and flood insurance. Earthquake damage is less frequent than tornadoes and hurricanes, and you can build to deal with it. Japan always rebuilds and they have it much worse.

I see that you also get earthquakes in Missouri.

I could never figure out the hate against California. Is it because we mostly vote liberal? We're not the only liberal state. Is it because we have a nice climate? Hawaii has a nicer climate and they're liberal too. Is it because of the hippy culture? That's mostly long gone. I don't know. We don't take pleasure in disasters in other states. After 911 we lined up to donate money. We don't joke about tornadoes and hurricanes. What's funny about fires and earthquakes that wipe out people's homes and kill people?

Don

I don't think it's hate. Yeah, maybe your liberal bias does irk some conservatives, but I love it. I think it's more envy than anything. It's kind of in the "Beverly Hillbillies" theme song-" swimming pools, movie stars"- it's the good life, fantastic weather. the hope of riches and wealth.

The Beverly Hillbillies was a bit of an exaggeration. There are some super rich here and jerks and oddballs. I'll bet there are some in your state too. The entertainment industry gives us a bad image. But, those aren't the real people of California. There are conservatives an ultra conservatives here. We gave you Reagan and Nixon. Reagan would never have been nominated for president if he hadn't had the exposure of being a two term California governor. And, we've had other republican governors. Remember Schwarzenegger? If it's envy, that's kind of sad.

Don

I don't hate CA; it's a beautiful state.
Thank you RadishRose. I'm sure Connecticut is pretty too. If I seem touchy, it's because on any forum if someone mentions California, others will be sure to make wisecracks about earthquakes and fires. It seems so petty and nasty. It's not funny to those who live with it and see the results up close.

Why do people do this? What do they get out of it? It boggles my mind. Other states have big fires. Alaska has major quakes. But nobody seems to think that's funny. My wife's sister lives in Oklahoma. She has a tornado safe room built into her garage. We don't joke about it.

Don

For my money, 90% IS political. You never heard the whining and crying until the last few years. Prior to that, Ca was just another state, with some others better and some worse. Take a good look at who and where the criticism comes from today and get a feel for what it's about.

But anyone who enjoys hearing of natural tragedies, or incidents in a given location, are just a blight on our society, sad to say.
