Can people exist without physical Currency? Will this change?

How am l supposed to catch a cab -- l no longer drive--without cash to pay him/her and how am l suppoed to get change back from him or her?
l know - very self centered.;)

All cabs I use here take cards.

A public apology is a moment. A client who is a potential liability takes forever to overcome.
..and they offered to reinstated his account...because they were totally in the wrong. You don't shut down someone's account because you don't agree with their politics...

Nigel however didn't accept their offer, and is now suing...rightfully so...

How would l be able to take a cab driver's card to get my change? l am obviously not getting. this. Over here you.'re not going to know what the tab is until you're there.
you pay by credit or debit card ....they have a card machine in every cab...you can also book an uber online, and pay online... they always know how much the trip will cost in advance

I’ve wondered how charities get on like the Salvos red shield appeal ….they go door to door collecting once a year.

Many other charities have fund raising events ( most have a wheelbarrow with a lid they wheel around collecting gold coin donations at such events ) We have that at Christmas street pageants / events held after pageants
to buy gifts for less fortunate / neglected children

We attend dancing venues at halls owned by councils and are called community centres where they only deal in cash, so I don’t know how they will get on if we eventually go cashless …

Think those who are pushing for a cashless society and going to be in for a big shock 😮 …..mind you I can only state whats happening in Australia ….:):)

we are NOW being charged a surcharge ….on credit card purchases ….

….I was recently charged $5. Extra in a buffet type eating place for a $50 credit card transaction:cry::cry: for us both .

I now ask before using my card if we are required to pay extra tax on the transaction , Aldi dosent charge it nor dose Woolies of Foodland at this stage …

Cashless gets potentially "interesting."

Say the "wrong" thing and it gets reported and you get put on bread and water, nothing elaborate paid for with your account. Not eating enough beets? Your meat turned off. Oversupply of fish bellies? No dairy for you until you buy your share. Didn't ride the bus two days this week? No fuel for your car.
Sounds like China policy.

What would muggers ask for anymore? Would pawn shops even pay for their items and how?
Home invaders…. just beak into homes here now days with knife in hand and Take cars / credit cards ( cause you can spend a certain amount just tapping and go ) ..with out putting in a PIN number.

Edited to remove Muggers …. Replaced with home invaders

Cashless isn't about pushing anything for me. It's all about convenience. It's about pennies adding up to pounds. I'm cashless because my life is easier without cash.

I use more cash than most people I know (not for any reason other than it suits me) - but many people in Australia do not use cash at all - what big shock do you think they are going to be in for?

What they will do is purchase a mobile device that takes card payments - eg https://squareup.com/au/en/hardware/reader

Many small places, like sports clubs, kiosks etc have them now s o that those who want to pay by card can do so.

I imagine charities probably do for donations too.

@Olivia these muggers don’t care of it’s day or night or even if owners home
Muggers aren't home invaders. They accost victims on the street. and probably pawn the stuff they get. lt's probably a small thing but that's where big things start.

ridiculousall cabs..here anyway...take card...., it goes a long way to prevent them being robbed
Talking about that l got a text today from a *good samaritan* who says that someone used my bank account to buy something from Ebay that cost something just under $500. And they were kind enough to give me a totally * ridiculous link* to my bank.

I keep cash in case the big balloon goes up and banks close down. Many going to be in a world of hurt without cold hard cash or gold.
very sensible... for now... because as you can see our banks have already closed down in their literal thousands...more than 6,000 since 2015.... , so having cash available means for now you can access money easily, especially if cash machines go down which they did very recently in the UK, and nothing worked in the supermarkets except the very few cash checkouts...

However come the day of card only payments, and I'm absolutely sure it will happen before too long... hence the reason for bank closures, encouraging purchases online , and card only transactions in many stores....then cash will be of no use....so anything stored under the mattress will be like confetti...

the other problem with that is that many people store cash away.. especially from the taxman.. well when they have to bank it all or lose it.. then many people are going to be facing huge buills from the Tax office...

Surcharges …

Copied for your info @January from added link….like I mentioned I’ve already had to pay at a Hotel buffet

I paid a surcharge for being a Sunday ( nothing new about that ) …..and cost of using my credit card
They exist because it isn't free for businesses to accept payments using those methods. Vendors are charged merchant fees for accepting electronic transactions.

With cash on the decline and cards on the rise, surcharges are applying to more and more payments.
An ABC analysis of RBA figures earlier this year found Australians pay about $960 million a year in card surcharges – no small figure in a cost-of-living crisis.

$960 million crackdown set to change the way Australians shop.

Under Australian consumer law, businesses are allowed to apply a surcharge to cover the cost of processing payments made by card .

The government flagged it would likely ban surcharges for debit card payments, which RMIT finance professor Dr Angel Zhong says ~~~~~would save Australians about $500 million a year.

Like I said …it cost me $5 .00 extra at a Buffett meal place ….s a surcharge is being added NOW ….for credit card transactions …but not a supermarkets at this stage ….

yes I know. and anywhere which does this has to advertise such - I operate one of the squares that are shown in link in my last post in our sports club canteen - people are happy to pay the surcharge for the convenience
It covers the cost the business incurs to use the device, we don't make any money on it.

When there is no cash, how will people with bad credit who can't qualify for cards pay?
