Can Supplements prevent Alzheimer's?

Exercise, a healthy diet, social engagement, and mental stimulation can all be
extremely helpful in preventing Alzheimer's disease or delaying its onset,
as all these things keep "the brain healthy".

Some studies are also looking at supplements that may help in the effort;

•Folic Acid: Taking FA helps reduce homocysteine levels, which can lower the risk
for both memory loss and heart disease.

•Vitamin B12...There support for a correlation between higher levels of B12 in he blood
and lower incidence of dementia diagnosis.
It, too, helps reduce homosysteine.

•Omega-3 Oil: Adding fish(salmon, tuna and trout) to your diet is an easy way to get more
of these healthy fats in your system, and fish oil is also available as a supplement.

It is recommended that you talk to your doctor before beginning any new regimen of supplements.

I take all these supplementsts.

Do you?..Or what do you suggest/recommend?

Stay healthy!

I always have a wry smile when I hear the oft reported ..playing a musical instrument, or being able to read music, or having mental stimulation every day like maths or word puzzles...ensuring you keep your memory tip-top.. etc..and add some vitamins to the mix

Well if that's all it took to ward of AZ.. we wouldn't have Actors ( who learn scripts every day).. Musicians , scientists, Doctors, Surgeons, Mathematicians, high achievers, Inventors, Writers.. and a whole gamut of other people ,.. with AZ...

I feel as @helenbacque said, that it's mostly down to genetics.. . I'm sure a terrible diet wouldn't help.. but otherwise I think like many serious illnesses it's down to your genes.... if your granny had it then you're likely to get it too..

I'm not big on supplements but do take a B complex every few days as well as D daily. I try to go with the balanced diet, walking, puzzles, and socializing.
Yes I do that too.. I take Vit D3 & K2... I take Biotin, Vit B12, and a Mutli Vit every morning without fail. I'm a researcher, and my mind is rarely switched off from that, so I'm always studying something or other online.

I'm a very keen photographer as most of you know.... I'm an avid reader, of non fiction only.. and I'm an equally avid fan of crossword puzzles especially cryptic, have been all my adult life ... and do puzzles every day offline. .. yet I feel due to the last 2 years of barely any interaction with other people in real life, my mind is diminishing, I forget things very easily, I re-read books that I've read before and not realise until half way through that it rings a bell...I forget my words I sound like I've been drinking because I just can't grasp simple words that I know and have used all my life..during a conversation with someone face to face...

My mother didn't live long enough to get old, so we would never know if she would have been affected by AZ... my father was a Violent psychopath who died ultimately from the effects of parkinsons disease ...I don't remember any of my paternal grandparents getting AZ..however my granny did become a little 'senile' toward the last 2 years of her life.. ..and I barely knew my maternal G/parents, so I don't know if they suffered from it...

Resveratrol, but not in wine, is believed to be good for the heart. Nicotinamide Riboside, AKA NR or Niagen, also has a considerable following. Then there is dark chocolate and in particular, cocoa flavanols. The list is pretty much endless. A couple of web sites devoted to the subject ...

I am a fan of Integrative Medicine MD, Dr. Andrew Weil. I think he has a nice balance between traditional medicine and alternative ideas.

from Dr. Weil (many additional recommendations, besides the supplements)

Supplements: Some studies suggest that vitamins C and E, either in foods or supplements, are protective against Alzheimer’s. In a January, 2004 study published in the Archives of Neurology, researchers reported that older people who took daily supplements containing at least 400 IU of vitamin E and 500 mg of vitamin C were 64 percent less likely to develop the condition.

have you or do you still work with darkrooms and darkroom chemicals?

If so, might want to mention that to your doctor at your next exam, maybe have some more specific blood work done to see if you have incurred any harm from those chemicals. I know a number of people who have gotten ill from chemicals associated with the visual arts...

take care.

B Complex is excellent but it is really best to take early in the morning, or, at least, say, before noon. It tends to increase energy. If you take it later in the day, it can interfere with sleep.

take care.

well, you know, it can be both ways. There can be strong genetic predispositions toward illness and supplementation and other efforts may reduce or even eliminate the power of those predispositions to cause illness.

So, those individuals who have engaged efforts which tend to ward off AZ, may have gotten it sooner, if they did not do those things. Or it may have been a worse level of the illness.

There can be a wide range of gradation with the manifestation of illness.

There was a Time magazine cover story about vitamins. The reporter interviewed scientists whose findings said that the effects of vitamins were inconclusive. But the reporter noticed something interesting. After those scientists did the study...every single one of them started to take vitamins!

Vitamin D3! It's anti-inflammatory and there's a clear link between inflammation and some types of dementia. It's also important for immunity. Study after study has shown that people with lower Vitamin D levels had significantly worse Covid outcomes than those who had adequate levels. Truth be told ...but you'll never see a head to head research review... adequate D levels are similar in protective benefit as vaccines.

I concur. I can take it up until 2pm. Any later than that and I'll miss a night's sleep. That's especially bad since I've always had trouble sleeping, probably because I worked nights for so many years.

Every time Alzheimer’s is mentioned I have re-research the difference between it and dementia, and then of course I begin to wonder if I have one or the other because of my difficulty remembering. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Basically, dementia is the term applied to a group of symptoms that negatively impact memory, but Alzheimer's is a specific progressive disease of the brain that slowly causes impairment in memory and cognitive function, and is the primary cause of dementia, all according to alz.org.

Also, Alzheimer's disease is the most well-known and common form of dementia but not everyone with dementia has Alzheimer's disease.

By the time they were my age, both my parents were symptomatic for dementia, and I thought my dad probably had Alzheimer’s too, but it was never diagnosed.

I take a long list of supplements, many of which target aging in general, and focus, memory, brain health and vitality in specific. Do they help? Well, I’m not exhibiting any of the symptoms my parents did, even before they got to my age! 😉Honestly though I don’t really know, but they don’t hurt, and they, along with a very healthy diet and moderate exercise will hopefully keep me sharp and vital for a long time!
