Can your pet tell time?

Because mine can. I feed my dogs at the same time each day. Dixie, our food-driven beagle, comes to me when it’s time. Stares at me. Paws at me! It’s 3 o’clock! How does she know? Her internal clock is spot on. Had a dog once who used to get up on the bed 5 minutes before the alarm went off. Finally figured out he smelled the coffee machine go off.

Definitely. We don't let our dogs outside until 8 am so they don't disturb the neighbors. Our one dog has a great sense of time and comes over to my chair while I'm working when it's time to go out. The time change confused him for a few days but he's back on schedule now. In addition they know when I usually take them out in the afternoon.

Animals are creatures of habit, and memorize event sequencing precisely. My dog knows that after we eat dinner, it's time for her chew-thingee. I may forget, but she never does, reminding me by pawing if I lapse...

oh yes...look at the face of this ''abused'' old man just this morning.

He's 13, a miniature labradoodle , and poorly, but he knew it was breakfast time, and he wasn't getting any because he had a liver test to have at the vets , so he had to go on an empty stomach... and of course he couldn't be told why...but he knew it was breakfast time

People are creatures of habit. We normally tend to do the same stuff at the same time. Animals are great at picking up patterns. If you're a lion, you notice what's going on when deer congregate at the river, day after day. I don't think animals "tell" time, but are aware of the patterns of daily life. One thing always amazed me was when I had to bring my cats in for their yearly check up. Normally, I wake up, and the cats would be waiting to be fed. On the morning of going to the vet's, there were no cats. They were all hiding. I could never figure out how they knew they were going to the vet's. Mikey used to hide behind the dishwasher where I couldn't get him. I'd have to call and reschedule the appt. What was the tip off? I actually made the appointments from work, so the cats wouldn't hear me. You forget they live with you, and know you very well.

oh yes!! I had 7 cats at one point, and they had a 'suite' on the second floor. In the morning I'd go up, clean their boxes, feed them, read to them and leave the doors open so they could have the entire house. They'd follow me down as I got ready for work. When I got home they were all waiting for me. One day the ex said they stay upstairs all day, and don't come down when I get home (3:30). But a few minutes before you get here, they file downstairs and wait for you. Minutes later I hear the driveway alarm. lol I don't know if they recognized my car sound or what. Our Skimpy starts the 4:00 a.m. stare and slapping our faces at 3:30 a.m. daily.

Our Bichons and our cat all know the schedule and are intent on keeping you on it.

One of our Bichons had the idea that no human should be in bed after 7:30 even on Sundays. If you did try to sleep in, she headed to the dresser and flicked one of the brass drawer pulls until you complied. The cat will get right in my face and "talk" to me about the "error of my ways" if I deviate.

Meal times, treat time, potty time, walk time, and TV watching time are all on their schedules, and they are remarkably accurate.
