Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced he is separating from his wife Sophie after 18 years.

The pair announced the split on Instagram today in matching posts written in both English and French.

His office also released a statement to confirm they had reached a legal agreement.

'They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward.

Canada's Globe and Mail reports that the pair will share custody of their three children.

Trudeau will remain at Rideau Cottage with the children, but Sophie has already moved to a different property in Ottawa.

They are both in the "mid-life crisis" age bracket, the mid-life rebirth, course correction self actualization phase that many people go through.
The US runs about 50% divorce rate at times so even if Canada's is half that 25,30% should be expected especially for a high profile couple because their status is their life. The job and "obligations" become their personal life. Some actually want a personal life not status, money etc. That's when it's time to move on.

Hopefully knocks actor Kevin Costner's divorce out of the headlines for a while. Or Megan and Harry's trouble in paradise stories

I don't blame Sophie at all. Justin is never home except to march in "Pride" Parades. The rest of the time, well, if it's Monday, it is Iceland; if it's Tuesday, it's Malaysia and if it's Wednesday, it must be Poland. Give the woman a break!

I know very little about the Canadian Prime minister and his wife.. despite the fact he seems to be over here a lot.. but I've always thought he looks a little odd.. JMO...

Canada can elect whomever they want. We certainly do that in the USA.

Is there a title for the Prime MInister’s spouse? The equivalent of First Lady for Trudeua’s wife?

I don't know much about them, but I think Trudeau is a good person, divorce is always difficult especially for the children. I wish him and his family well, and happiness in the future. Marriage and divorce is a very personal thing, Hopefully they have many happy memories of their eighteen years together, more happy than not.

Nobody was born to please another person forever, I'm not against divorce, I don't think holding onto a marriage that has failed is wise at all, for anyone involved.
