Car Alarms Then and Now...Do You Pay Them Any Mind?

When I first started hearing car alarms, they always got my attention. I thought someone was trying to break into someone's car or something suspicious was going on. Usually it was nothing.

One guy at work had the alarms on his truck set to be so sensitive, that it would sound off from the vibration of passing vehicles. Nowadays, whether it's on my block or in the parking lot at the store, it seems like there's car alarms going off all the time, and nobody seems to pay attention. I know I've stopped and pretty much block them out. Kinda like the boy who cried wolf.

Do you listen to car alarms and look for trouble? Has your car alarm ever alerted you to a thief or vandal? Do you ever use the 'panic mode' button on your modern car key for any reason?
 

Oy, around here I'm sure they know how to disable the alarm before they steal your car. People ignore car alarms for the most part.
 

Living in NYC you learned to stop responding to car alarms - they became just so much more white noise.

Where I am now is different - a car alarm usually means something spectacular is happening, and people at least peek through their blinds to see what's happening. :rolleyes:
 
Best car alarm ever is on my brother's truck. It yells repeatedly, "This is Big Jim's truck! Get away from Big Jim's truck!" (My brother's name is Sean...lol.) I've never asked him where he got that custom alarm. Maybe through the dealership. It sure beats the droning horn sound that most of us only get annoyed about. That's the kind I have, and it's only gone off when I've opened the back door before opening the front.

My car (used) came with an alarm. I would not have bought one for it. I think my car is adorable, but I think that about frogs, too. Especially tree frogs.
 
I don't think anyone pays much attention any more in a parking lot to a blaring car, but I once read a good tip about using your alarm. If you are in the house and hear someone messing around outside, just hit the alarm button on your car key fob and the horn will scare them away. I tested this on our pickup and I can do that from several places in the house, and not at all in others. I would think if you were upstairs and heard someone downstairs, you might be able to get to a window and set off your car alarm. That should scare someone out of the house quickly.

Nah, outside my front door you hear Caliie clear his throat...then the deep from the chest "GRRRRRARRRRGRRRRWWWWGRRRRRRR" even if you were armed it's human nature to run for your life.
