Car Shows in Local Parking Lots

These aren’t really shows per se. More just a meeting in a parking lot of a big box store usually. A few times this summer we’ve seen groups of antique car collectors hanging around together in the early evening. We wandered through and looked at the cars from our youth.

Then there’s the younger group who hang around in other parking lots. Nothing bad happening. Seems better and cheaper than congregating in a bar.

When I was young, we’d cruise around a drive-in restaurant.

Who else remembers or still experiences these car meetups.

Count me in. I too remember cruising around a drive in; the A & W Root Beet stand in Hawthorne on Hawthorne Blvd. Street rods galore. And, girls everywhere. Then, late on Saturday night (actually early morning, say around 3 a.m.) we'd head to Pershing Blvd on the west end of what is now Los Angeles International Airport for drag races for an hour or so before heading home. Pershing then had no street lights so it was only lit by the cars' headlamps of onlookers. Those were the days; long gone forever. Nothing by crazy street exhibitions by cars burning rubber at an intersection doing circles. That's only real dumb. Pershing was supervised by cops who knew we were just kids needing to let off some steam. Great fun.

As for car shows if you are interested there is a website called allevents.in where you can search for car shows. This will give you the 'formal' or organized ones. But, there are many in L.A. that are informal. For example there's one every Thursday night at a nearby burger joint in my neighborhood. Lots of these in L.A. area. You just gotta know where to look or who to talk with.

Different styles of camaraderie all centered around cars and enjoying them. I like that. It‘s nice seeing people taking pride in what they’ve done. We do have formal car events every year too.

I remember back in the late 60's and early 70's in our hometown every Friday and Saturday night the thing to do was to scoop the loop and hang out in the town square. This was prime time to socialize, pick up chicks, or to set up a clandestine drag race. Back then everyone drove a hot car as that was the peak of the muscle car era. My first ride was a 1963 Impala Super Sport 327 4 speed tranny and later a 1969 Camaro with 396 and 4 speed tranny. I had a lot of street cred back then.

We have a couple of locations where people meet up to show their Hot Rods or classic cars. I've been to one such place near my home. Very low key.

Back in high school there was one major street that was referred to as 'draggin the main' on the wknds. Every wknd 2 of my gfriends and I were there. I usually drove my parents 88 4 door Oldsmobile. It was so BIG.
We'd be looking to catch a glimpse of our favorite guys.

They had to be home earlier that I did, so I'd try to have them spend the night w/me, so we could stay out later.
We still reminisce about it to this day. And, the people we met a long the way.
