Car thefts & Car jackings increasing in northern states

In Minneapolis, one contributing factor is that the city council has been decimating the police department. I sincerely hope that these folks wake up and learn that police are not the enemy, the people committing the crimes are. Somehow and sadly for the people of Minneapolis, this council seems to have gotten confused among all the pressures of political correctness.

Car jackings like guns and drugs is an organized business run by very professional thieves, not teenage punks. The top gangs will readily kill the owners or drives as it may be if they attempt to refuse to hand over the ride. These gangs have millions of dollars and there is little chance of recouping vehicle taken by them as they are quickly processed and put on barges and shipped to Africa and other locations. They take orders from wealthy persons and then simply go out and get the car the customer ordered.

A number of the car jackings in Minneapolis have been done by teenagers and some of these cars have been recovered. This is reported in the local news. So while it may well be true that many car jackings are done by professional thieves, it is also true that at least some are done by teenagers, at least in my area. As usual, there is more than one perspective on these things.

I wonder why there is an apparent increase in "Northern" crime. Somehow, I just don't think Southern states are that much more law abiding. That brings up a problem. There is no federal standard of who has to report what. This is a purely voluntary obligation. Some places accurately report crime, and others don't. report any. For those that don't, it keeps insurance rates down, and looks good for the Chamber of Commerce. When you hear of people bandying crime statistics around, they are so skewed as to be meaningless.

These are good points that I have never really thought about, but are certainly worth taking into account.

Within a given area though, crime stats can be useful, so that when Minneapolis reports that car jackings are up 537% over last year, it is the same people counting the same statistics and that does have meaning. Your point about the differences between various parts of the country as to how they report crimes does make sense.

Google Minneapolis and you will see many such sites reporting the same crime stats reported by the MPD:

Sadly I think it's safe to say car jacking has become a national trend with many perps being teens. Car jacking always was and still is a violent crime committed by criminals, never forget that.

Some people have to live in, or near big cities, where there can be/is lots of crime. Jacksonville, Florida wasn't a big city, like Chicago or Los Angeles, but they sure had, and still have, their share of crime. Where we lived in Jacksonville, southern part, there wasn't nearly as much crime as other parts, but there was still some crime. Higher population, more crime.

Jacksonville's population is 982,000, compared to where we live now with 82,000 population. There are those here that completely refuse to go down to Denver, due to traffic, more traffic and tons of people.

It is a pretty turbulent world we live in right now, isn’t it. And I wish I knew what the answer was...or I wish at least somebody did. The first thing that ran thru my mind when I read your post, were words to that old song, “It’s a strange, strange, world we live in Master Jack.”
