Carpets or wood floors, which are the best?

I have carpeting on top of hard wood floors but not the fake hardwood. With my joint issues, I wouldn't even be able to walk on that surface.

This house has carpet except for tile in the kitchen and bathrooms. We bought the best carpet we could find and it's lasted well. Since I have no pets, fur or hair isn't an issue. Also, carpet is softer to walk on and is my personal preference, even though it needs more attention with cleaning and dust removal than hardwood floors.

We had one house with hardwood floors and didn't like it. The least thing could scratch them, and especially moving furntiure or chairs. The color would be lighter in areas like the dining room from scooting chairs, or always sitting with shoes in the same spot. This dining room at least has tile so that part hasn't been a problem, since tile is less susceptible to color change from wear

I would say, tile floor is the best in southern climate. Tile floor is more durable than hardwood floor(and the cheap but popular fake engineered plastic wood floor), and is more resistant to scratches. You can put big area rug on top if you like the warmth in colder days.

I’d have hard flooring everywhere, if possible. The only place we have carpeting now is in the one bedroom and it was too pricey to even consider replacing it. I hate vacuuming it. There‘s carpet in the basement rec room and bedroom. It’s too cold from fall through spring to not have it there. It’s not used much.

Growing up in southern Calif, we had tile in every rental house, that black tile. My mom would shine it till it was like a mirror and then scream at us for walking barefoot leaving toe prints, man I hated those sort of tiles.
I like the feel of carpet. I have had laminate flooring and carpet. For pets laminate was good for easy muddy feet clean up but I barefoot most of the time so I hated the smallest bit of anything on the floor. So I have not found the perfect fit for my pickiness.

Home came with carpeting through out. One day my wife decided she wanted to work out watching a Denice Austin work out video. The carpet in the living room I guess was not good to work out on. That began the DIY project of removing the carpet & putting in hard wood flooring. 4" random length red oak was her choice.

When I had all the carpet removed she said why not paint the living room? Her color choice for walls & trim bought & room painted. She was so happy with the end result she decided that the rest of our home should have hard wood floors & each room painted.

She never did exercize to those videos. I however did get a lot of exercise.

I am sure you are very handy.
And free labor, why not.

We have hardwoods in the living room, kitchen and dining room but our family room is slightly recessed so it is carpeted. The stairs, landing and bedrooms are carpeted. We have lots of rugs over the hardwoods.

We had friends in the neighborhood that had beautiful Travertine tile in all the public spaces in their house. It looked great, but every time I visited I would get a sore back from standing on it. Not so with hardwoods.
