Years ago I clipped my cats nails, Checking on Googles nothing seems to have change except they tell us to put a piece of dried spaghetti in the clippers but don't say why. Anyone know?
This is a constant battle. I usually have a cat-savvy friend trim Bella's nails. Whenever I take her to vet for something, they also give her a nail trim. I've tried (I have proper clippers) but suffice to say it doesn't go well. Fortunately she doesn't scratch furniture, but as her nails grow out, if I play with her or try to pick her up..YIKES!
I clip my cat's nails at least once a month, and I never used the uncooked spaghetti method to get him used to the clippers, I just went ahead and clipped his nails as a kitten.
The idea of the dried spaghetti is strictly for training the cat not to be fearful of the clippers and what to expect. You hold the cat on your lap, let him smell the clippers and give a treat, then clip the dry spaghetti with the clipper, which would give a similar sound and look of clipping his nail. You hold his paw gently while doing it, and give a treat to show him it's okay.
The dogs get nails trimmed a few times a year at a groomer. We've had more cats than we can count and except for one who was special needs we never trimmed claws. Try to trim Ninja's claws and you'd need skin grafts after.
Well, I tried 3 times over the past 3 days. Epic fail. No matter how careful and gentle I try to be, no matter what method I use, Bella squirms, yowls, and freaks out. And she is STRONG.
So I’m gonna have to call my friend (who won’t be available until week after Thanksgiving). She’s good with Bella. Amazing to watch….really quick and efficient, very little resistance.
