CDC studying reports of heart inflammation in young Covid vaccine recipients

Health agency says the rates of myocarditis are not higher than expected and no causal link has been found to mRNA jabs

Some teenagers and young adults who received Covid-19 vaccines have experienced heart inflammation, a US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory group said, recommending further study of the rare condition.

In a statement dated 17 May, the CDC’s advisory committee on immunisation practices said it had looked into reports that a few young vaccine recipients, predominantly male adolescents and young adults, developed myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.

The condition often goes away without complications and can be caused by a variety of viruses, the CDC group said.

CDC monitoring systems had not found more cases than would be expected in the population, but members of the committee on vaccinations felt that healthcare providers should be made aware of the reports of the ā€œpotential adverse eventā€, the committee said in the statement.

It did not say how many people had been affected and recommended further investigation.

Dr Amesh Adalja, senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said vaccines are known to cause myocarditis and would be important to monitor to see if it was causally related to the vaccine.

It is important to look at the risk-benefit ratio, he added. ā€œVaccines are going to unequivocally be much more beneficial outweighing this very low, if conclusively established, risk.ā€

The CDC said the cases typically occurred within four days after receiving mRNA vaccines. It did not specify which vaccines. The US has given emergency authorisation to two mRNA vaccines, from Moderna Inc and Pfizer/BioNTech.

Israel’s health ministry in April said it was examining a small number of cases of heart inflammation in people who had received Pfizer’s vaccine, though it had not yet drawn any conclusions. Most of the cases in Israel were reported among people up to age 30.

Pfizer at the time said it had not observed a higher rate of the condition than would normally be the case in the general population and that a causal link to the vaccine had not been established.

Pfizer and Moderna did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Saturday.

The CDC in late April, after news of the Israeli investigation, said it did not see a link between the two.

Earlier this month US regulators expanded authorisation of Pfizer and BioNTech’s Covid-19 vaccine to children aged 12 to 15.

(Myocarditis is an inflammation of the heart muscle (myocardium). Myocarditis can affect your heart muscle and your heart's electrical system, reducing your heart's ability to pump and causing rapid or abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias).

A viral infection usually causes myocarditis, but it can result from a reaction to a drug or be part of a more general inflammatory condition. Signs and symptoms include chest pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, and arrhythmias.

Severe myocarditis weakens your heart so that the rest of your body doesn't get enough blood. Clots can form in your heart, leading to a stroke or heart attack.

Treatment for myocarditis depends on the cause.)

I wouldn't get my kid vaccinated. Not under the age of 25, really...if it was up to me up till then. Nah, my kids are nobody's guinea pigs. After it's all studied and tested through normal channels and all that, then ok, but I'm still not comfortable with it.
Problem is if they want to attend college they will have to be vaccinated. I'm glad I never had to make that choice. 😄

So, I googled myocarditis and covid, and found the most confusing mess of suppositions, theories, guesses, and "I don't know" that I've ever seen.

Some articles are about the disease Covid-19 itself causing myocarditis.

Some articles are about a small number of young patients maybe getting myocarditis after receiving the vaccine.

As they used to say, holy Toledo!

I predict that what is believed about any of this will entirely depend on the person's political orientation. So what else is new?
😁

"The condition often goes away without complications" according to statement by the CDC.
but if you research Myocarditis that's not always true.

Usually, a mild case of myocarditis will go away without any lasting damage. Severe cases may not be diagnosed until you have the symptoms of heart failure. Even severe cases may go away without notice, but these severe cases usually cause ongoing and irreversible damage to the heart muscle.

Doesn't say if the cases are mild or not, it also doesn't tell how many have been affected.

I used to trust the CDC but now I believe the CDC downplays the side effects of the vaccine. Also since they no longer count the number of "breakthrough cases" unless there has been a death. Why?

A little over 61% (~163 million) of Americans have had at least one shot. ~130 million are fully vaccinated. I've had the first Moderna, will get the 2nd in a couple of weeks.

I've had both Moderna and my husband had the Johnson&Johnson, we're both happy to be vaccinated. I had some mild side effects from the second Moderna shot, but well worth it. I'll take the side effects, which are normal and expected, over a Covid infection that puts me in the hospital or under ground.

I'm sure most everyone would if they were "normal" side effects.

The Moderna vaccine sure affected my heart! Kicking myself for getting the vaccine!
I know a 80 something with no history of heart trouble wound up being hospitalized for almost a week for somekind of cardia and fluid build up in legs with in a month of the second dose.

I don't know how similar seniors and youth are but in the beginning I thought they said youth was at limited risk. Probably because their immune systems are stronger and these vaccines are festering hyper immune responses especially if they had it.

Personally a patient should be tested for the antibodies prior to receiving the vax.
