Ceilidh bands in your area

Old codger
I met a guy in a local bar today who said he had taken up playing a violin again later in life, (having first learned the instrument as a schoolboy) and now took part in local gigs supporting a "ceilidh band".

Its a while since I experienced such a band playing, so may try to get along to a performance in the area scheduled for two weeks time.

This isn't the best clip in the world, but I thought forum members might like to hear a ceilidh band playing, (just the accordion here):

I lived in a small city in central Canada, where they were popular. Elsewhere, not so much (if at all). In Nova Scotia perhaps, but I haven't spent time there.

No such thing around here. Where I live, when it comes to local bands, if it ain't country and western it doesn't exist. Very sad.
I'm very happy with country and western music, and in a sense a ceilidh band doesn't compare, but I'm glad we do have both here, (though nothing like the standard of country and western bands and singers you enjoy).

My parents met at a Scottish dance in Sydney. One of my favourite dances when I was a young girl was Strip the Willow. I learned it in primary school. There is something in my DNA that responds to the sound of a Ceilidh band.

Honestly, I don't enjoy C&W music. Songs about "my dog dun left me and I'm outta beer" do nothing for me. In my youth it was called hillbilly music and even back then I preferred Jazz. I don't know much about a ceilidh so I looked it up.....sounds interesting.

New word to me, but I liked the music.

I grew up in Dunedin, Florida, a town proud of it's Scottish roots. Our high school band had a big bagpipe contingent and all wore kilts. While I was there a "Highland Games" thing was started. As part of it looks like they now have "Ceilidh on Broadway", not sure what it is, new since I left.
