(CNN) Actor Chadwick Boseman, who brought the movie "Black Panther" to life with his charismatic intensity and regal performance, has died.

Boseman has battled colon cancer since 2016 and died at home with his family and wife by his side, according to a statement posted on his Twitter account. He was 43.

"A true fighter, Chadwick persevered through it all, and brought you so many of the films you have come to love so much," the statement said.

"From Marshall to Da 5 Bloods, August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and several more, all were filmed during and between countless surgeries and chemotherapy."

With his role as King T'Challa in the boundary-breaking film "Black Panther," he became a global icon and an inspiring symbol of Black power. That role was the "honor of (Boseman's) career," the statement said.

He graduated from Howard University

A South Carolina native, Boseman graduated in 2000 from Howard University, a historically Black college in Washington, DC. While there, he also attended the British American Drama Academy at Oxford in 1998.

"It is with profound sadness that we mourn the loss of alumnus Chadwick Boseman who passed away this evening. His incredible talent will forever be immortalized through his characters and through his own personal journey from student to superhero! Rest in Power, Chadwick!" University President Wayne A. I. Frederick said in a statement.

Never saw Black Panther, I'm in the wrong demographic.

Was very impressed by him in "42" where he played Jackie Robinson. Whatever star power is, he had an abundance of it. This is really tragic news and my heart goes out to his friends and family.

Demographics aside, I never saw Black Panther either. (It earned $1.347 Billion)

I really enjoyed Chadwick's performance as iconic baseball player Jackie Robinson in "42".

RIP Chadwick šŸ˜”

My brother-in-law succumbed to colon cancer in his mid-30's. He spent years suffering. I hope there is a cure for this cruel disease, perhaps not in my lifetime, but my daughter's lifetime.

43 yrs. old is too young. What a loss. Rest in Peace, Chadwick.

I only knew him through his kinetic performance as Black Panther, but he transcended the character despite playing him while ill and under treatment. His early death from colon cancer reminds me of why my upcoming colonoscopy is necessary...

It's unfortunate that whenever someone dies of cancer, it is used to sell procedures. Just as with mammograms, by the time cancer is detectable, it has been there for many years. (If a doctor is honest, he/she will tell you that.) At that point, survival/outcome depends on how aggressive it is; not how early it's diagnosed.
That is why most of us know people who have had cancer for many years & outlived it, and we also know people who didn't live very long with it.
Sharon Osborne has had colon cancer since 2002....much longer than Boseman.
We're also told "If polyps are found during a colonoscopy, they can be cut before they become cancerous." What they don't tell us is that polyps are a normal part of the aging process & cutting them is not a good idea.
And breast tissue is vulnerable to radiation, and the degree of vulnerability is different & unknown with different people - which makes mammograms risky.

Sorry to hear this. He did a great job in ā€œ42.ā€

I have always felt especially sorrowful for those people who died with cancer. This is a terrible disease that kills hundreds of thousands each year.

I started watching ā€œBlack Pantherā€ on TV last evening and I fell asleep, but not because it was boring, but because I was outside at a family event most all day.

I was so shocked and saddened when I heard of his death. I saw part of the commencement speech at Howard and was very impressed with this young man. He obviously made an impact on many as outpouring of grief and support for his family have come from all walks of life...entertainers, politicians, sports figures included. Posts on Twitter about Chadwick have received the most likes ever at 6 million in 24 hours.

I had seen him playing James Brown but didn't realize it was the same actor as Black Panther. I have to watch that movie again. Five of my family members went with me to the theater and saw it but I was so tired (hadn't gotten sleep the night before) that I slept through the first part of it. I will watch it again on Disney. Rest in Paradise Chadwick.

Sad, seemed like a class act not knowing of him until the Marvel movies and Black Panther. He kept his problems to himself which is class in itself.

Have to wonder about the age if there wasn't something else going on or the cause was external/chemical. Yes this and other cancers can strike at anytime this just seems really young for this. Also have to wonder about his treatment doing as much damage as the disease which inturn made it easier for the cancer to take hold

RIP
