The chain drug store business is apparently slowing. Walgreens to close 200 stores and CVS to slow new openings.

When they went to those stupid memership cards is when I stopped shopping at those places unless zero choice or emergency. Walgreens in particular used to have great door busters and coupons for everyone . Now that card.

I always thought there were too many of them. Rite Aids all over town plus CVS and Walgreens. I'm not surprised.

I haven't seen a Rite-Aid in ages.

I did hear that Walgreens plans to stop selling cigarettes and tobacco products (CVS stopped a few years ago).

Rite-Aids closed down years ago by my house. Now there's a Walgreens every ten blocks it seems, don't care if some go away. I don't like the Walgreens card either, but like the supermarkets, I got one to save a few buck when I did have to buy something there that was on sale.

I've also never liked the idea of discount cards even tho I do use them because it would be foolish to not. I believe that everyone who does your business the honor of shopping with you should be offered the same price for the same item. I should not be forced to carry a 'loyalty' card in my wallet in order to get your best price. It should be mine simply because I walked in your door.

10 year old boys love the idea of being in an 'exclusive' club and retailers buy into that concept because so many of us still think like a 10 year old boy.

Or 10 yr old GIRL. Lots of them masquerading as adults.

I'm not surprised that CVS is slowing down new openings. They already have them up the wazoo here and everywhere else I've been. There are 8 here in Mobile. With construction just finishing up on #9. I mean how many is enough already?

The few times I've been to a Walgreens or CVS, their prices seemed quite high. The last time I went there was last Fall, when my wife sprained her ankle, and the doctor said to get a basic walker for her to use until it healed. Walgreens was right near the hospital, and they wanted $99 for their cheapest unit. We drove over to Target and got a better one for $45.

"Retail" continues to take a hit....more Sears, Penney's, etc.,etc., are closing. One day, the shopping choices may be Walmart and Amazon.

We get our Rx’s at a supermarket. Prices are good, especially with Part D. I think supermarkets took a lot of business away from stand alone stores.

I wonder how much the mail-order pharmacies have impacted their business? I only have one recurring prescription (blood pressure) and I get it every 90 days in the mail.

Same here.
I get 90 day supply too . Use Walgreens for temporary meds. My daughter is a CVS pharmacist and they are turning some of their stores into wellness centers. She and her partner of 25 years will be going to another store. Her store now is top rated for service and sales. She has a lot of older customers that plan on following her to the new store. Don't think the "wellness center concept" is going to work at this store. The store she is going to will not be a wellness center and she likes that. CVS is going to find out that their regular customers will be following her and her partner to their new store. She takes the time to know her patients and discuss their concerns about their meds. More than once she has called their doctors and questioned the meds they are prescribing as patients don't always tell their doctors about the other meds they are on. She monitors my meds and of course the whole family and friends ask her about theirs. She is our legal "drug dealer" and I am so proud of how she loves her work and cares for her patients. She asks about their families and how everybody is doing. She has quite the following at the store and I am sure many will transfer their scripts to her new store as it is not that far.

Considering that [we] baby-boomers are one of the largest population segments, and the fastest aging group , also the group with the most ailments....Hard to believe their business is suffering ? And there will be another group behind us. I just wonder what else is fueling this change ?

I think their high prices are a contributing factor.
I did home care for an elderly couple who patronized them for prescriptions,it always seemed there was some type of disconnect between the refill request or doctors office and the availability of the meds.
I'm aware that this could have been on their doctors end, the particular location or the language barrier, they were Romanian.

The Walgreens I regularly go to stopped selling cigarettes 6 months ago
I use the card everytime I'm there, most of the time I save a couple dollars,no complaints
