Erik Von Daniken , the Chariots of the Gods author has passed away at 90. His books spawned alien archeology. Despite being poo pooed by the traditional academics his books, theories etc helped create and/or propel a brand new field or genre of archeology.
He was managing a hotel when he wrote his most famous book Chariots of Gods which changed his life forever. He had some other issues but his passion in life turned out to be alien archeology.

When I first saw his theories on a tv unsolved mystery show in early 1970s he definitely got me thinking about things to this day
