Chicago area having trouble charging electric cars in extreme cold

Electric Vehicle owners having trouble charging their cars in the extreme cold weather. Those car batteries will not charge in freezing temperatures unless the battery is preconditioned to warm them up. Also ev owners should not let the charging level drop below 20%.

Some charging station lots are being described as ev grave yards because so many need a charge and/or have car batteries not charging. Affecting Tesla owners the most.

Cold is drain on batteries in general. So will using the heater or defrost alot.

It is common in many parts of Canada to have a block heater OR a battery warmer installed in your vehicle, powered by an extension cord from the house. I have to ask......Why wouldn't that work for a battery powered car ? Obviously the battery warmer would have to be physically bigger for a Tesla, but why not? JimB .

Apparently Teslas have built in warmer/preconditioner but many forget to hit that button prior to charging the batteries. Also some probably let the batteries get so low there might not have been enough left to warm themselves.

I have the feeling that if the Tesla was built in Europe, the battery problem in cold weather would have been dealt with during the design stage. US car makers seem to think everyone lives in SoCal or Florida. JimB.

And so it begins....the foolhardiness of rushing ahead without
complete testing.......imo
Not only weather but hills or high traffic condition because a lot of stops and starts from red lights and stop signs will probably drain more power than highway.

I notice alot of ev drivers don't seem to realize how fast they can accelerate. Biggest tailgaters seem to ev drivers. Many older drivers which means they're probably trying to drive it like a gas car.

EVs carry a warning about charging in low temps. Not a bright thing to do.
There's probably ev drivers that never read the manual or ignore alarms, if they even notice them. Surprised ev companies don't mandate a new owner class .
