China's New Place in Global Affairs

Say, 30 years ago, China was a pretty non-descript country, huge population with many destitute. In the '90s, we began hearing new and unfamiliar overtures emanating from China. New leadership. New acceptance of Western Ideologies, new incursion into world trade.

You may not like the reason, stated as factually as is reasonable, why such change occurred so abruptly. It was revealed back then, that the new Chinese leadership was "technology based", the actual leaders in power had backgrounds in Technical Fields, most being Degreed Engineers.

America remains led by, and run by, Lawyers.

See the difference? imp

Democracy is messy. An autocratic leadership is able to bring about rapid change. Singapore is another example of a society pulling itself up by its boot straps. Without the iron will and long incumbency of Lee Kwan Yu I doubt it would have happened.

In China central control is still absolute. If they want to build a dam they relocate whole towns and no argument. That's how you can get things done quickly.

"That's how you can get things done quickly."

However, though, at the expense of the unfortunate or dispensable. imp

Exactly. That's why I prefer the much messier democracy.
What I don't appreciate is politicians who phaff around instead of doing their job of governing in the interests of the people and the nation as a whole.

Our federal government ATM resembles a circus more that a parliament.
Thank heavens we are a federation and the states are getting on with most of the important stuff.
