Chopping down the Hadrian's Wall Tree

16 yo "faces no further action"

Is "no further action" synonymous with we (the police) made a knee jerk reaction and arrested the wrong people in an effort to do "something" even if it was wrong?

Now and for the rest of his life the 16 yo has to answer the question "where you ever arrested?" with a "yes, I was accused of cutting down the tree at Sycamore Gap."
well he wasn't named... as is often the case here for people under 18... and no as he was not convicted of a crime, in the UK he doesn't have to declare it

At last, 2 people have been arrested for the chopping down of the Iconic Sycamore Tree...

Two men have this afternoon been charged over the destruction of the historic Sycamore Gap tree.

Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers have today been charged with criminal damage after cutting down the iconic tree in September last year.

They have also been charged with causing criminal damage to Hadrian's Wall, which lies directly next to the tree, and will appear at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on May 15.

The Sycamore Gap tree, located in Northumberland, is one of the UK's most photographed trees and featured in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves starring Kevin Costner and Morgan Freeman.

It was found chopped down last September, with its upper section lying across the historic Roman barrier.
Specialist Prosecutor for CPS North East's Complex Casework Unit Gary Fothergill announced: 'The Crown Prosecution Service has authorised Northumbria Police to charge Daniel Graham and Adam Carruthers with causing criminal damage after the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down last September.

'They have also been charged with causing criminal damage to Hadrian's Wall and will appear at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on 15 May 2024.

'We remind all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendants are active and that they have a right to a fair trial.

'It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary, or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings.'

Last September, walkers first noticed how part of the iconic tree appeared to have been marked with white paint, indicating someone may have felled it with a chainsaw.

@Jules ..they've just announced these 2 guys were the same ones...

The men were arrested in October in connection with the incident and had been on bail since that date, police said.

Det Ch Insp Rebecca Fenney, the senior investigation officer in the case, said: “There has been an ongoing investigation since the Sycamore Gap tree was cut down.

“As a result of those inquiries, two men have now been charged.

“We recognise the strength of feeling in the local community and further afield the felling has caused, however we would remind people to avoid speculation, including online, which could impact the ongoing case.”

Whatever happened to the remains of the Tree???
good question....

A preliminary inspection of Hadrian's Wall by Historic England revealed "some damage". The felled tree was cut up and removed by crane for storage on National Trust property. On 9 March 2024, BBC News reported that the first seedlings had begun to sprout from genetic material recovered at the site.

Two men have plead not guilty to felling the Sycamore Gap tree in Northumberland and causing damage to Hadrian’s Wall last September.

Daniel Graham, 38, of Carlisle and Adam Carruthers, 31, of Wigton attended a hearing at Newcastle magistrates court on Wednesday after being charged with criminal damage for allegedly cutting down the tree.

Graham entered pleas of not guilty, while Carruthers entered no plea.

The 300-year-old sycamore was named England’s tree of the year in 2016. It featured in the 1991 film Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and was a popular site for stargazing and marriage proposals.

The criminal damage caused by chopping down the landmark has been valued at more than £620,000, according to court charges.

The defendants are also accused of causing £1,144 worth of damage to Hadrian’s Wall, a Unesco world heritage site, which was hit by the falling tree.

The district judge, Zoe Passfield, declined jurisdiction, saying: “This case is too serious to be heard in the magistrates court.”

The pair will attend Newcastle crown court on 12 June for their next hearing and they were both granted unconditional bail in the meantime.

What absolute cowardly vandals they are. They turned up at court in Gimp Masks....

Two groundworkers filmed themselves cutting down one of Britain's most famous trees with a chainsaw before boasting about their 'moronic mission', a court heard today.

Daniel Graham, 39, and Adam Carruthers, 32, from Carlisle, Cumbria, are on trial accused of felling the historic Sycamore Gap tree, which sat in a dip next to Hadrian's Wall in Northumberland, in an act of 'mindless vandalism'.

The friends allegedly felled the tree 'in a matter of minutes' having driven 40 minutes from Carlisle to the tree in the late hours of September 27 2023 in Graham's Range Rover.

After chopping down the Sycamore Gap tree – which had stood for at least a century – Carruthers, who had received a video of his young child from his partner, allegedly told her: 'I've got a better video than that.'

Minutes later, Graham sent a video said to show the pair felling the tree to Carruthers' phone, Newcastle Crown Court heard.

Graham and Carruthers are on trial accused of causing criminal damage without lawful excuse to the tree – to the value of £622,191 – and to Hadrian's Wall, a Unesco World Heritage Site, to the value of £1,144, caused when the tree fell across it.

On the first day of their trial, prosecutor Richard Wright KC told the jury that the pair showed 'expertise and a determined, deliberate approach to the felling.'

'First, they marked the intended cut with silver spray paint, before then cutting out a wedge that would dictate the direction in which the tree would fall,' he said.

One of the men then cut across the trunk, causing the sycamore to fall, hitting the wall.

'Whilst he did that, the other filmed the act on Graham's mobile telephone.

'Though the tree had grown for over a hundred years, the act of irreparably damaging it was the work of a matter of minutes.

'Having completed their moronic mission, the pair got back into the Range Rover, and travelled back towards Carlisle.'

The pair are also accused of taking a wedge of wood from the tree after it was felled as a 'trophy' to 'remind them of their actions, actions that they appear to have been revelling in.'

I wish I could Medic.... I know to some it's only a tree, but this wanton vandalism is becoming endemic....
