I'm thinking the first pack I bought as a teen was 30 cents from a machine.

Ahh yes, cigarettes, ‘Murica’s great love, second only to guns! I find it oddly fascinating when in a checkout line in a store to see the clerk extract a pack from the padlocked lucite wall safe for a customer ahead, so costly have they become!

Remember commercials like this one? Chicks love it when you blow toxic chemicals in their face…
