Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army's victory over France at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The holiday is often confused with Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16. Cinco de Mayo is a larger celebration of Mexican American culture in the United States than in Mexico.

When building the plant in Tijuana, the subject of Cinco de Mayo came up. The Mexican management staff, that had been poached away from the Ford Plant in Hermosillo, never heard of it as any kind of holiday. So much for that culture training... although driving by the Avenue of Heroes, provided me an opportunity to explain why Abraham Lincoln's statue was there. Probably the only thing the culture training got right... or that I remembered.
