Class Culture: The Self Destructive Skin Tone Debate

People have always made distinctions between various members of society. These days, there is an obsession with skin colour. In the past, people were defined by their origins. In Britain, for instance, everyone was aware of whether they were Celtic, Saxon, Norman etc. In Northern Ireland, a person is referred to by his home town....'He's a Belfast man'..for instance. I have to say that those with non-European skin colour need to realise this and not see prejudice in every little criticism.

Does anyone really give a crap? (Yeah, I don't want the Crips/Bloods living next door, but I don't want the Hells Angels/Bandidos there either).

My supervisor & I were discussing this last evening after first seeing this thread......her daughter & husband have a good friend, born in England, his mother came from West Africa and his father from the Caribbean.......he's a friend, he's NOT a 'black friend'.

Both she & I have had friends of various hues......it's the person not the coloration, and as far as I can tell most people feel the same way.......I just don't see us as special & 'enlightened' in this aspect, we're just 'people'.

Sorry Fast Trax, I scrolled through the attachments. Life is becoming too complicated around the issue of colour. I've probably mentioned this somewhere else on SF, I grew up in Britain and had friends whose skin was a different colour to mine, who practiced a different religion, who married people of another race or colour, it does not matter. What matters is how we treat one another while we spend our time on earth. We are all the same under our skin which are the coats that we wear throughout our lives. We all bleed red blood. Maybe I'm just old and jaded?

RobinWren as a species we all pretty much become jaded after our expectations of an intelligent and caring life form is far from the truth. It's sad enough that different cultures clash but it's unforgivable that some cultures self destruct because of jealousy over appearance. Shame.

BTW: Good post.

Wow good thread, a lot to read and watch. It will take me some time but I will watch them all. :) (y) I do know that unfortunately slavery was a multi-generational situation of torture and brainwashing. When survival or being treated like a human is determined by how light your skin is, that HAS to mess up people's head, especially being born into that situation. Multi generations of trauma will take multi generations to heal. Lots of PTSD going on. Messed up parents raise their kids with the same messed up mindset without even realizing it, they think it's just the culture. When the slaves were freed, they not only needed money or finances to help them get started, they needed LOTS of therapy. And the fact that even after slavery ended there was still overt racism for a long time didn't help with healing. Most people focus on the financial effects of slavery like multi-generation poverty, but forget about the mental effects. Unfortunately many were still enslaved in their head. Look at how some still call each other the N word. It doesn't matter who the word comes from, it's still an ugly word no matter who says it. It looks like it's just now starting to heal, I hope the healing continues. The healing is needed more than anything.
Also I wish we could just do away with the notion or idea of race all together. Stop identifying people by race and just use nationality. We need to ban race words because race is a myth anyway. Stop calling people who were born here African American or Italian American or whatever. If they were born here they are just American. Period. Darker people don't need a special name to call them. Call them by their name or their nationality. We need to focus on getting rid of race words/names.

Perceptions R Us: About 8 years ago, we were on a particular ship at a particular time and observed a particular couple.

Later, on a cruise forum there was a post to the effect that people on said ship were 'racist' because they stared at said couple, (written by the male half).

I remember them well.....she was, I believe, a Filipina...nobody was staring at her. He, OTOH, looked as if he were auditioning for a role as a Caucasian Robinson Crusoe posing as Bob Marley complete with dreadlocks.

Guess where looks were directed.....they weren't looking at a 'mixed couple', they were looking at you, doofus.

Fast Trax, you might like to talk to H & M they seem to have an issue with this subject. When I lived in Toronto I had a friend whose parents were different nationalities. They had a number of children, each child had a different skin tone. At the time I couldn't help but marvel at the generosity of nature and birth, sadly we moved away and I lost touch.

@FastTrax , Thanks for all the material, TL;DR... I don't particularly believe in reincarnation, but if that ends up happening for me I'll at least have a fighting chance to read and view all the material you provided. ;)

So, in a nutshell- pretty much about the different skin tones, and how all humans have 'em?
