Coeur d'Alene firefighters and police injured in Idaho shooting ambush

Yup, there's a large Aryan Nation/Neo-Nazi compound there.
There some speculation that after one of them went to trial over 20 years they have to give up there home which was used by the same fire department for training ie they burned it on the same date he killed these firefighters.

Yet they can find no ties to those groups

@JustDave, my cousin who lived there was a state policeman but he died about 4 years ago. He liked hunting and fishing which was a good place to live for him. He originally came from California which did not offer him the same lifestyle as in Idaho.
Idaho is beautiful country, and has large tracts of designated Wilderness. I preferred Western Montana, with Alaska always in the back of my mind. I got comfortable in Montana and stayed there for 45 years, probably because it was so different from Chicago that I felt like I had found paradise and stopped looking.

North Idaho was blessed w lots of cheap, remote land where these militia's bought several hundred acre properties where they live and train. Not only do we have our home grown idiots, N Idaho has become the "safe space" for others that might describe themselves as "extreme conservatives" that come from the west coast because they like Idaho politics. Idaho used to be a community of mostly simple libertarians people trying to make a living w a "live and let live" attitude. It's not that way any longer.

"Idaho has seen several legislative proposals aimed at repealing the state's longstanding law banning private militias. One such bill, Senate Bill 1056, was sponsored by Sen. Dan Foreman, R-Moscow, a U.S. Air Force veteran and former Moscow police officer.
Huh?...Moscow Russia ?

Moscow, Idaho is one of the branch campuses of the University of Idaho. I always wondered where they adopted the name for that town, which is about 10 miles across the Washington/Idaho state line from Pullman, Washington, the seat of Washington State University. It's like an small but competitive enclave of intellectuals of two states. My uncle played the bassoon for the Moscow/Pullman Symphony and ran the University radio station on the Pullman campus, and my aunt worked on the Pullman campus as a writer for the Department of Agriculture. Washington State University is a kind of cow college for vets, wheat farmers, and Agri-phyles. Not sure what they teach in Moscow.

Oh right, I see, that makes more sense ...I keep forgetting that so much of America have taken their names from European countries....

Easy with all the speculation folks. I seriously doubt that this has anything to do with any militia group in the area. It is sad to me to see posts here painting the entire area as white supremist. I have several friends of mixed race that live in that area. None of them have ever had any problems. I have never had any problem, visiting the area, over the last 50 years.

How many of you even know the racial makeup of Coeur d'Alene, without looking it up?

Repeating things you have heard or read in the news, can be a catalyst for hate. I will wait to read, from several news services, and hear from friends in the area, who the shooter was. One of my grandsons is a tribal paramedic/fireman and he has friends that responded to that fire.

I think several people have said they know the area well, and have visited...

I must say tho' I looked up that area where the shooting was taking place..on Google street view.. and it's very smart.. so I was surprised. I know they say never a judge a book and all of that, but it did come as quite a surprise to hear it's the home of of Neo-Natzi's et al.......

What valid info says it is the home to the Neo Nazis? We have a Black friend that moved there from California, two years ago, and he loves it. He says he has met a lot of patriots of several races and that is why he moved there.

So these events aren't always ideological, and don't always involve ethnic hatred. There seems to be an increasing number of people who decide their solution for dealing with frustration or facing a bad patch in life (or simply experiencing boredom) is to go on a sniper escapade. These people are nearly always male.

Modern society is hoping to drive safer cars, while in the realm of ordinary daily life these senseless violent eruptions present unpredictable risk.

I'm glad that, although such events have happened in Canada, they're not nearly so frequent.

Woah! Hold your horses, I didn't what say it was I was repeating other people said... saying that I was surprised to hear it given that it looks like a very nice respectable area !

It is a respectful area! There is less racism there than most big cities. Anyone calling it currently a Neo Nazi area, doesn't know what they are talking about. Happyflowerlady seems to know the history of the area better than anyone else posting here, so I won't repeat what she said. It is a beautiful area and our kids and grandkids go there several times a year to visit friends and go to the lake.

See what happen on this thread. Some jump to the conclusion that the shootings and fire were related to white supremist or Neo Nazis that they have read or heard are in the area. Any militia that is still in the area, is known for supporting law enforcement and first responders.

Please read this article. You will see that Coeur d Alene, Idaho is a low crime area. Also the shooter wasn't a Neo Nazi or part of any militia group. He was no doubt suffering from serous mental issues.

Moscow is the main campus for the U of I from which I graduated w BS Forest Management. Idaho has business architecture, law school, engineering, mining, ag, teaching, forestry, range, and wildlife, etc, etc.

C'dA was the home of the AN from 1974-2001 when they were bankrupted by a law suit.

Wiki - "In September 2000, the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) won a $6.3 million judgment against Aryan Nations from an Idaho jury, who awarded punitive and compensatory damages to plaintiffs Victoria Keenan and her son Jason. The two Native Americans had been beaten with rifles by Aryan Nations security guards in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in July 1998.[25][26]"

Yes, I had no idea but you are correct. Here's an article for anyone who is interested. That certainly doesn't mean there was any white supremacy involved in the attack. We will learn more as we go along.

The task force’s victory over the Aryan Nations does not mean the struggle against white supremacy has concluded. Coeur d’Alene remains a town of mixed emotions between those who allow racism to flourish and those who believe Idaho can be “too great for hate.”

Hmmmm? - a very sad and destructive countrys event [in all seriousness] I feel a myriad of emotions and none good.

ref: may I recall The Screwtape Files by the well known [once] author C.S. Lewis??

In all fairness, no one knows for sure what draws the more vile elements to North Idaho. The article, which is about something that everyone within a 200 mile radius knows about, but clearly indicates that many of locals resisted the element too. It could have happened another place, which would then get saddled with N Idaho's reputation.

Clearly, Idaho doesn't want the reputation. But they got it. In the end, I don't know what draws that element. But I would speculate that once that reputation, warranted or not, becomes public. Similar elements will start looking at it. The area is somewhat pristine and offers some solitude which seems like an escape to city folk.

Couer d Alene the area where the article focuses is just a stones throw from Spokane, Washington, and Interstate 90 gets you there in minutes so you still can get your fill of big city congestion, quality health care, jostle, and a bit of fine dining for one evening without having to check into a hotel, if that's your cup of tea. There are more pristine and isolated places in North Idaho, that I would choose first, but they have received a bit of overflow from similar interests, which would bother me if I had to live there. But no place is perfect.
