Coin Shortage Is Real

I visited a store yesterday and paid cash including coins. The cashier said "Great! We need coins." So I guess it is real and the urging of noncontact payments have created it. Whoever thought we would have a coin shortage?
 

I've seen several stores, in recent weeks, with "coins needed" signs posted near the cashiers area. That's fine with me, as I have a big jar full of coins, and now when I go to town, I put a handful in my pocket, and pay with exact change.
 
A shortage of coins won't affect people who have
contactless cards, but it will be a disaster for those
who depend on hard cash to live.

Now is the time for the Card Companies to come up
with a contactless pre-payment card that you can put
money in and top up when needed, I know that we can
do this with a smart phone, but the people who do not
have a contactless card probably don't have a smartphone
either.

We put change in a jar, in early May filled that jar and rolled the coins, we still have them. We are living in a different house completely across the state so not able to use the change.
 
I cashed what little change I had at the local Wegman's a couple of weeks ago and paid the 11-12% surcharge.

I feel that I did my patriotic duty and used my new found $7.00 to buy lunch at the Wegman's deli.

Now all I have is a prescription bottle filled with quarters for the laundrette and a few Canadian coins that were rejected by the coin machine.
 
The number of coins is normal but they are being hoarded. Roll them up and take them to the bank.
