College athletes are going to be paid!

A court has ruled that they can be paid a salary besides tuition and room and board. Football is the key to this coming to the fore as it brings in millions to many colleges and universities. It strikes me that for many players college is just a way station to the NFL and the big bucks, not for the education. I am ambivalent about this matter and would like you to convince to support it or not...

I agree with your thinking; but I'm strictly against the practice. However, the players are more prepared for a comfortable life

than a grad with a simple liberal arts degree who usually winds up flipping burgers @ McDonalds, because they're not trained

for anything else.

So much for college football, school pride just went out the window, welcome to the NFL.

I'm for it. I dont know how true this is, but I have heard that many of the players
don't have enough to buy decent clothes and don't have pocket money. I worked
as a secretary at the college I attended. Playing football is a job and is hard work. Many guys get hurt playing football in college so are unable to play professional. The colleges make tons of money from football. Maybe not all colleges, but the SEC certainly does. Speaking of the SEC, they have, starting this fall their own
SEC channel and are going to broadcast all the SEC sports- not just football and basketball

I'm putting myself to bed. I don't know how I did it but I wrote 2 letters and was just trying to correct the first. Sorry. I haven't even had a glass of wine. That may
be why I got confused.

I think a free college education with room and board is plenty of pay. Start paying players a salary and the richest schools will buy the best players. It will doom college football.

That's my take. Now if the colleges make money off of promotional material like jerseys, posters etc featuring these players yes then the players should get a piece of the pie. But then again as long as their education is paid for what's the gripe. I'd be for mandated or guaranteeing a college education meaning ALL course work and expenses paid for even if years after their college sports career is over.

Last I heard college is for learning to prepare its students for a better life, nobody said you HAD to play football or any sport for that matter.

But the fans & sports commentators want to be entertained and players want the big time notoriety and pay. This is why anything actually education related I would pay. I would even give the players a small food & expense account for a trip to store or school supplies. There will be discrimination suits abound from any department. Suppose a chemistry major makes a game changing discovery should they get pay along with a scholarship?
