Colombia plane crash: Four children found alive in Amazon after 40 days

Right before I retired, we sent a group of Marines from the Force Recon Division down to the Amazon for training. I was on the list to lead one of the patrols, but only as a consultant. I was OK with doing that, but I came down with bronchitis and the head doctor in North Carolina thought is best to remove me from the list because of the heavy vegetation in that area would only increase the effects of the bronchitis.

When the men came home, I asked around about their trip and a few of them weren't ready to go do it again, so I am guessing that it wasn't no picnic or vacation. Survival training is probably one of the toughest challenges the Marines use to build character and confidence in some of our Divisions. I'm sure that what some of the men in Vietnam saw were pretty much the same things as is in the Amazon. What stands out about the Amazon is the millions of different species of different living things that live in that hell-hole.
