Colonoscopy: has anyone had one…

Not painful.

The worst part about it happens at home, 2 days before ....The Cleansing.

The cleansing is also not painful, but it is awful. Really awful. Worse than the actual procedure.

Get through that, and the worst is over.
But, did you have it with sedation? I may have to forgo sedation if I can’t find anyone to take me.

I think they gave me a low dose Valium or something about 15 minutes before the procedure.

My doc's office has a medi-van service. Does yours? If not, like a few already said, they just ask you to wait 15 minutes before leaving. Longest I waited was 10. It's not like they have a hall monitor.

I had one last month, with no sedation, over
here they give you gas to breath, if you feel
any pain caused by the air that they pump
in to open up the colon, you can drive safely
with it, as soon as you feel uncomfortable,
take a breath of gas.

Mike.

I've had several and my gastro always sedates me without asking. I never had any bad effects, but all I can say is the preparation is worse than the actual procedure. He also does a laryngoscopy. For that, I WOULD probably more likely need sedation. When he said he does both, I said I didn't mind as long as he did the laryngoscopy first. ;)

I've had two and the second time I asked if I could do it without sedation and the doctor said no, his practice always does it under sedation. He said the reasoning is if they find a polyp they want to snip it out right then and send for a biopsy.

Made sense to me. I wonder if those that have had the procedure without sedation had a polyp removed and what that felt like?

Why in the world would you put yourself through pain because you haven't asked the right people for help ? I previously wrote a post that outlined at least 5 places that you should be talking to, to get help from. Take action now. Jimb .
I will tomorrow…nothing is open on the weekend.

Had one in January -- prep was very easy and gentle; whole procedure was simple [about 25 minutes in all]. As for transportation, we have an excellent bus system.
Prep is always the worst part for me. The facility I use will not do the procedure if not accompanied by an individual who can stay during the procedure and take me home.

I’ll have to ask about the medi-van service.

The solution they gave me to drink the day before, I had to mix myself. Of course it had directions, but it had the taste and consistency of mucilage. You think with all the improvements in medicine, they could have something that tasted better.

The flavor I have had is mildly minty in taste. Yes you mix it yourself at home. Jimb.

I've had 2 Colonoscopies. The first one they found cancer and was scheduled for keyhole surgery. They took out 14 cm of my bowel and was home in 4 days. The next one I had was to confirm the 'all-clear' - and now I'm to have another one within 4 months just to check everything is okay. Here in Australia, they won't allow you to drive yourself home, somebody must pick you up.
You have been so brave. I hope you are fully well now.

My sister did one without sedation and said it was horribly painful and she wouldn’t do it again that way.
I had 2 before and the first one was painful. They didn't give me anything like sedation...nothing. The doctor was inexperienced and even yelled at me when I squirmed.

The other one I had went ok, no pain at all. It was by a very good and experienced doctor.

We have to have someone pick us up if sedation is given for anything.

I'm having one later this month. Lucky I found someone to take me and drive home. The procedure is on a Friday, but on Monday of that week, I can't have anything with nuts or seeds in it until after the procedure. Then starting that Wednesday - no raw fruits or vegetables. The day before only clear liquids and they can't be red, purple or orange - well, there goes all the good tasting gelatins. No dairy and no sweeteners, just coffee, tea (no creamers or milk or sweeteners, and no red, purple or orange beverages). I guess that leaves water.
